Unhappy Both my dogs are dead

I'm devastated. I feel terrible...

Today I found my male Siberian Husky floating in the pool, it seems he fell in it at night and drowned
The strange thing is he has been living in that garden for the past 6 years, since he was just 1 month old, so he knew what it was.
The other strange thing is I didn't hear a thing. Not the dog falling into the water, nothing. And I sleep with the window open, just about 12 feet away from the pool.

Just some months ago (4 or so), we had to put down my female Siberian Husky because she had some sort of cancer and there was nothing else to do.

Some of you knew this dogs for almost 3 years now (Tom, Chris, Sole, Will, and many others).

My wife and 11 month old daughter are on the beach, I didn't tell them about this. They will return next friday, I don't know what to do. My daughter LOVED that dog. I remember how my wife cried about the other dog, and now this accident...

This happened last night/this morning.
Just a while ago I finished dinner and went out with my dog's food plate, I forgot he died and found myself standing outside waiting for him to come running towards me. This is realy hard for me.

I've lost two dogs and a cat in the past. It's so hard....I think it's because their friendship is unconditional.

I've found that getting a new pet after an appropriate time of mourning helped a lot.

Thank you guy, I appreciate it.
I decided I will replace them with two puppies next week, so far I think a german shepperd and a golden retriever, so they grow up together and with my daughter.
The way the dog died still puzzles me...anyone heard something like that happening before? This dog was so strong that he could easily pull himself out of the pool.

Larger dogs tend to have a shorter life span, and six years old might be pretty old for that breed.

I had a friend with a Newfoundland who apparently went down into the lake right before it died, as they found him lying in the shallow water of the beach.

Maybe there is some sort of instinct to go toward water when the animal realizes it's ill?

I agree on the shorter life span. My friend used to raise Siberians in Alaska and she said tneir normal life span is 6-7 years. Not to say that all Siberians live that short of life, but it's not uncommon. It may have just been your dog's time. Many dogs will leave home when the time comes.

Your dog may have been feeling OK when he went into the pool, but then became ill, like a heart attack and couldn't pull himself back out. It makes it harder not knowing and not being with him at the end.

I'm so sorry for your grief. Our pets are our family members and their loss is devistating to us. You and your family are in our thoughts. Take care.

Red face

Wow, that's really something very new to me, I had no idea about a 6 year lifespan being normal for Huskies.
The female that I had to put down because of cancer, was 11 years old!
About the male, he was the strongest Siberian the vet has ever seen in his 30+ years in the field (he said that, not me).
It's time to ask him why he never mentioned anything about the lifespan of the breed...

Thanks for the info!

Joaco,
FWIW,my friend has a Siberian that is 11yrs old and still going strong.I gues it depends on a dog.I didn't know about their lifespan being that short either.

I, too was amazed when my friend told me about Husky's short life span. Personally, I think with good nutrition and care there's no reason not to expect 10-12 years. Another friend who has German Shepherds says their lives are usually only 7-8 years. I think this may be because of extensive unhealthy inbreeding so previlant in the USA. I would say to be sure to research the dog's background, etc., but when my friend Rosa got her German Shepherd puppy, she did study the pedigree and was given a certificate stating the dog was free of hip dysplasia in her lineage. Well, the dog had a hip replacement at age two, and now needs her other hip replaced at age 4. She is so wracked with arthritis she moves like a very elderly animal. Very sad.

I'm really sorry to hear it. I think you are right to get a replacement as quickly as possible. When my son was about 1 year old our dog was pretty much the only individual he connected with. I don't even want to thing about what it would have been like if our dog had died then (or now).

Sorry for your loss. I am having a dog put to sleep on Monday and am not looking forward to it. She has had diabetis and we have been giving her two insulin shots a day for a while now. She has gone blind and now might be loosing her hearing. She is becoming disoriented running into stuff and not being able to find her way around the house anymore. The vet also thinks she has Cushings disease. This dog was my grandmas dog and I received her after my grandmother died. Not a good time of year for this stuff to happen!
