I can sure relate to the problem people are facing there. BTW, congrads on the letter, very well written IMO. Prices in NJ on real estate are outrageous and driven by the luck of new construction, but now the governor is proposing a bill that will eliminate new construction period
Just imagine what those prices would be if this rediculous bill will pass. How the heck people elect someone like that?I know I voted against this schmuck, but to no avail. On top of that he's proposing to eliminate funding for the theaters and arts. Where do you go from there?Sorry, just couldn't help it after reading your letter.

Wink

Awesome!

You should consider trying to persuade and sway opinion through written word more often.

Well written. If you include some good references regarding the death toll numbers inflicted and things like the accusations of the US assisting Saddam with his chemical weapons tests, I think you could sway a lot of people toward to your way of thinking on the matter.

FWIW, I am at this point against a any offensive move against Iraq, but am not completely anti-war and don't agree with the extent of european passivism (is that even a word?). I just don't believe Iraq poses an immediate threat that warrants action.

IMO N. Korea needs some more attention. I hear we anchored an aircraft carrier in S. Korea. Whoopy doo! Whats that going to do when so much of the naval fleet is in the mideast?

Anyway...not to detract from your writing. Good work.

wg,

One good thing about your proposal is that all of those wealthy people will leave Santa Cruz. Of course, then you'll still be left with declining enrollments, (like a huge number of municipalities in the country,) and no one to pay any taxes to support the infrastructure.

We already have a tax system which penalizes high earners to the tune of almost 50% of their income. Exactly how high would you propose these "rich" taxes go?

Well, the reason the enrollments are going down is because (according to the school district) families with children can't afford to live here.

I think the likelihood of this ever being implemented is so minute that I wouldn't worry about what form I am proposing, but the idea is to have some cutoff (arbitrarily I picked $150,00 as being the point beyond which people have disposable income for non-essential items). Above that cutoff, you start to tax, and make the tax go higher exponentially. If Bill Gates lived here, the goal would be to get about 99% of his earnings.

Most filthy-rich people have tax shelters and residency in off-shore tax havens.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about this happening...

One's a novelty. But when they all start moving in, stuff in the neighborhood starts to change. Gangs of rich kids start hanging out on street corners. They all eat together in the school cafeteria. Soon you start to feel nervous, you have to lock your doors, and you feel like a prisoner in your own neighborhood. They tear-ass up and down the main streets in their Lexus SUVs, waking up the neighborhood. It gets bad fast from there, soon regular people have to move away and property values go up.
