Question DIY protein skimmer

Hey!

does anyone have any plans or pictures or any easy steps to show me of a DIY protein skimmer, and im looking for something thats less then 50$ all together, and something that i will actually be able to put together myself.

**- this skimmer is going to go on my 10 gal, so the pans for it shouldnt be something that will be 20" tal, im thinking more around 12", or even smaller

thanks guys!

rp marine, if i shouldnt get that then what do you suggest? ive looked everywhere on how to make a diy skimmer, and for me it seems impossible, so i think im giving up on that, and if my dad finally decides to take me somewhere to buy a new 30gal, and the equipment for it then i need to know what i should get for it.

I totally agree with RP Marine!!!! It's noisy as hell!! but, you can make a homemade overflow for it to take the scum off the surface by glueing a 2" piece of pvc that has holes drilled in it to a 1¼" pvc tube w/acrylic adapter inbetween the two to hook them together... Don't forget to cap the bottom of the 1¼" pvc tube with a piece of flat acrylic or you WILL get sand into the filter!!!!

Sorry I cant post pics, but a DIY is possible . Mine was made by Fish Junction in Columbus Ohio by the owner. ( sorry store no longer open) . Its made from plumbing peices. Uses a closet flange for the base with PVC pipe for the body ....Mike

I got plans for a cheap skimmer, First off I got these at wallmart there food containers by rubbermaid.

1GAL #3144

2QT #3141

Then go to home depot and get 2 4" female adapters

then a 2" PVC PIPE 6" and a 2" Pipe another 6"

Im still in process so im thinking on what to do here.

2 90 degree elbows 3/4"

1 - 4" to 2" reduction bushing

Im not done yet but a basic idea like a euroreef havent figured out what im going to use for venturi or riser tube yet.

The skimmer that Drillsar refers to is the 'Easy as Pie Euro-Skimmer' over at Reefcentral.com. This thread is HUGE, 800+ posts.
This skimmer is awesome by design according to its many users. I have made it but cant use it as my reef is only a 5 gallon mini bow.
Regarding the venturi, from the above refed. post;
"I made the "venturi" for the intake out of a 1/2" pvc tee, with a female threaded top t. I screwed in a male threaded hose barb for the air supply. To get the "venturi" effect I boiled the tee till soft and smushed the middle right under the air supply"
This is a large skimmer for a 10 gallon,
good luck,
Lakedawgs
