Borneman Flush Device, has anyone tryed it?

Hiys guys, i hope your all well.

I have just been reading 'Aquarium Corals' by Eric Borneman and was looking at the water movement bit and came across his flush device on p.341.

It is basically a resevoirtankabove the tank which is fed by a pump. The resevoir has a bulkhead in the side which has a toilet flush valve, so when the water fills to a certain level, the float has risen and pulled the flush flapperup so opening the valveand then water drains back down to the tank.

Just wondering if anyone has tried it and found it works etc.

Hey Andrew,

I've seen it in action and it works great for a wave or surge.
Kinda weird looking above the tank but works too cool.

yeah just wondering as it woulkd be a good deseign and inexpensive way of getting random water movement from existing pumps with it.

do you know what sort of size it should be for a certain sized tank etc?

The best thing to do is build your set up with plumbing/mounting/etc.Then experiment with your water movement and what your tank can handle as far as amount of surge/capacity.You can then either shorten the tether on the float for less surge or lengthen it for more water surge. The shorter the tether the more frequent the surge and vise/versa.The container would probably need to contain about 4 or 5 gals, the see how your surge works. Are you using a sump/hang on overflow/drilled tank/with built in overflow? And how big is your tank?

yeah tank is 100 gal with 2 overflows into sump of 60 gallons. i have a small 20 litre tank and a powerhead which could feed it. but this isnt really for this tank just thinking of the future when i have a 2000 litre with 5000 litre sump!

HEY,
SUMP IS BIGGER THAN THE TANK???THE FUTURE SET UP THAT YOU SPEAK OF???ARE THE OVERFLOWS BUILT IN?DRILLED ETC??YOUR TANK AND SUMP SHOULD ACCEPT THE FLOW W/NO PROBLEM.

yeah i know sump bigger but thats because i will have to build a strong base for the main tank that will be between 6 and 10 feet high???????? will be concrete. also the sump will be that big as i am going to use some of the garage up for it and that 10 feet is the width of the garage, so why not use it all, and as with such a big set-up i am going to need a big skimmer????

yeah the overflows will be drilled and have 2" piping with 4 overflows which will go straight down, well 3 will go straight down and one will go to the frag tank. i think that four 2" piping should be able to accomodate 18,000 litres of water an hour? is that right?i can always add more returns as i have a 7 foot wier to play with!

just the area where the water collects before going down to the sump in the piping.
