stand for 180
Hi all, I am in the end stages of planning for a 180 reef tank. I would very much appreciate plans, advice or photos of a DIY stand I could make out of wood ie 2x4's. I will have a carpenter build an esthetic frame with doors on front and sides later, so I would like the front to be as open as possible for easy access when the front doors are open. Thanks very much! Gerard

here is a link to a good webstie showing you how to build a stand, someone gave me this website and im in the process of building this stand for my 30gal tank, but this layout is good for any size tank, just follow the direction.

Hey Gerard!! Welcome to REEFLAND!!!!
For my 135 I used 4x4 to make the top frame that the tank actually sits on. That way I have the full 6 ft span open in the back of my tank for access to my sump! Works like a charm! I then used 4x4 in the corners for the vertical support. When I built the frame I cut the top 4x4 at 45's so that my vertical could be placed right under the 2 4x's so that way the cut was in the center of another 4x4 below it to provide support. I'll take a couple pics in the morning and post them for you so it will be easier to see! |

Hi gerard, Welcome to Reefland!
If built correctly, 3/4" - 4'x8' wood of your choice will be plenty sturdy. I know it makes people nerves looking at it but beleive me, I hav built plenty of them using this method and the stands are plenty strong. If you want, a 2x4 frame can be built first though. Scott Z. |

I have to agree with Reefland. Plywood IMO is the way to go. With the way the layers are put together warping is non-existant. If done right It's structurally better than 2x4's Ours was done with 3/4" plywood, and faced with finished oak, naturally stained. If you want some more info on this one let me know and i'll send a few more pics and try to get you some dimensions
