    if one is doing diy type stuff must you use specific aquarium sealants or are normal ones safe or need longer curing times or are they safe if you wash them off with water a couple of times?;;

    Many silicone sealants you find at the local hardare store have added anti-mildew compounds which are not safe for aquariums. Some are completely safe though. That is the trick. But, for how cheap silicone is, I just buy the stuff at the local fish store.

    Aquarium Safe Silicone

    I used GE Silicone I to reseal the inside of my tank about two months ago and everything is fine. The information I found on the internet suggest that GE Silicone I does'nt contain any mildicides but GE Silicone II does. Just thought I would throw in my two cents.

    I read that GE silicone II windows and doors is safe. THe bathroom stuff has the mildicides.

    However, I tried using this stuff and it sucks. after one week, it still had not cured, so either i have a defective batch, or it sucks!

    anybody tried this stuff?

    I'm with Steven on this one (ooo eerr!).

    No really, if you can get in an LFS AND it says it's aquarium safe then you're pretty much on a winner. I wouldn't trust ANYTHING I can get in a typical DIY shop. Cheap crap is cheap because it's crap - not just because it lacks cynaide or similar.

    A non-toxic 100% silicone sealant is NAPA brand (part #765-1336). I have used it for years and it does and excellent job. The cost is only $10 for a caulking gun tube.
