shimming up tank
Well, I have my stand mostly built. Must say that for first real construction project, it came out pretty good.
I ran into a slight problem, however. The top of the stand slopes a bit from front to back and right to left, probably about 1/16 to 1/4 of an inch. Do you think it would be OK to put shims under tank to make it level? Any other ideas short of ripping top of stand off and leveling? Nate |

Sure shims will be fine but I would over compensate a bit because they might give a bit. I would over compensate by about 1/8th and after water is added it should level out nicely.

So the tank seams should be fine, even on a 100 gal. acrylic tank? Should I shim the entire length of the tank or just in the spots where it wobbles?

Oh, let me understand this a bit more.
Are you going to shim under the stand to make the top of the stand level or under the tank so just the tank is level? You should shim under the tank so the entire top of the stand is level and all of the tank is sitting flush on the top of the stand. Scott Z. |

The tank actually rocks back and forth on the top of the stand, which is 3/4" ply.
I'm a little confused by your last response. I will NOT be shimming the stand since the stand sits flush on the floor. I think I cut the back support posts just a tad short so when I put the ply on top, its a little off. When I use my level at angle from, say the front left corner to the middle of the stand, it's pretty level. Its most from front to back that the tank wobbles. The way things stand now (no pun intended ) I would actually have to put shims under the tank, not the bottom of the stand.I'm thinking I should probably take the top piece of ply off, shim it up and replace? i had the same problem when i built my diy stand, it sat perfectly on the grounf but the top was a little off, so i unscrewed the top plywood off and put some shims in a couple of corners to even it out and i screwed the plywood top back on and that was the end of my problem.

I think I got it solved. Lifted up one end, shimmed it up and everything seems level now. Yea! |
