Heya... I haven't done it yet, but I intend to make moonlights for all of my tanks, and I have these pages saved that seem to be very helpful:
http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_nightlight.htm
http://www.theledlight.com/LED101.html
http://www.kaotica.com/frag/diy/moonlight/
http://www.quickar.com/noqbestledcalc.htm

Good luck

Too much work...

Go here:

http://autolumination.com/fixtures.htm

Go to the LED Fixtures Page if the link doesn't take you there.

Buy 2 or 3 of the (3) Lamp or (8) Lamp Blue LED Fixtures for dirt cheap $5.00 for 3 led and $7.00 for 8 LED. They come already assemble and ready to be installed. Then purchase a small 12V DC 2Amp power supply for about $8.00.

No work and you can add a ton of LED light for next to nothing.

The (3) LED Fixture puts out about 20,000MCD in Blue and the 8 Lamp puts out nearly 50,000 MCD in Blue.
