Drilling Tanks: Back Glass vs Bottom Glass

I was just wondering why most stores drill their tanks on the bottom with stand pipes as opposed to the back of the tanks?

I personally like the look of the back glass drilled out as opposed to the stand pipe.

What are the pros & cons of either?

Cheers,
Vic [Veng68]

Good question. I think most manufacturers drill bottom glass before they temper it for simple reason, and that being that most tanks sold as kits with stands and all filtration and sumps to be located in those stands. Plus, you can hide all of the plumbing in the overflow box. Secondly, I think that it is easier for draining the tank via hole on the bottom of the tank(gravity) than anywhere on the back glass( I don't think it would be a good idea to drill back glass very low although I've seen it done).

You can place the tank closer to the wall also when drilled in the bottom. I prefer tanks drilled in the back because I like the extra space it allows inside the tank.

Kevin

I appreciate the bottom drilled glass because I want my future reef tank in the middle of a room and viewable from all four sides.
