I always use www.usplastics.com (6 Foot length minimum buy)
6' of 6" Extruded Tubing is less than $60.00 and they'll cut it for you too. or http://www.aquaticeco.com (if you need 4" or 2" tubing in small quantities)

www.mcmaster.com is a good place to get cast acrylic tubing and they even sell it by the foot!

Well the main reason I went with the jugs from walmart is for EASE and CHEAPNESS. These things are dirt cheap and they fit togeather like butter. Once you go for Acrylic you open a whole new can of worms and the thing starts costing soo much that it is not really worth DIY IMHO. Also its a pretty big gamble buying all those expensive parts to only have it not work well possibly. Just my .02

im with you on the savign money part, i went out and bought the walmart containers just to try it out, they were much larger then i expexted and the thing is that after i measured it all out (including the pvc parts needed it wouldnt fit under my crapy metal stand) i guess im just out of luck on the whole diy unless i make an all pvc pipe one
