Finshing basement

I plan on making a home theater room with an 130-180g in wall reef tank at the back of the room. The tank will have its own access room, maybe around 6x8'. Will the noise from a loud movie, or even just general T.V watching hurt the fish or reef? I use to have a 90g reef tank in my apartment, and the noise from my T.V never seemed to bother them to much. But I want to work out any bugs before I start building down there.

Hi iamwildman,

No I would expect any problems with the tank being around a home theater, unless however you put on Finding Nemo at which point the fish might become confused or even get jealous thinking you have gotten a bigger tank.

Really, my tank is in our living room with surround sound systems, etc. and there are no problems at all. You'll be fine.

No sound problems here. I have a Bose speaker located next to the reef.

As for Finding Nemo - they do get jealous on that....but if you hang a picture, they get shy wondering if they too, will become as motionless as the poster.

No problem but why a 130 to 180 why not get a 210 or so since it will be in wall. I am planning on some day when i buy my house to have a "L" shaped tank totalling about 500 gallons or so in the basement wall.

I've thrown college apartment parties with loud, obnoxious and very drunk guests standing next to the tank, jumping up and down and everything turned out fine- although I don't recommend the jumping part, unless you like feeling your veins and arteries constrict.
I once hung a picture of the Sea Gulls from Finding Nemo (Mine, Mine) and the fish got spooked and swam on the other side of the tank until I took it down...

Hey!

To contradict them a bit, I did read something somewhere (that helps) that stated the vibration from the loud noises does stress the fish etc. Of course that wasn't sciectifically proven or anything. Just something to consider...

I wouldn't do it, I had a tank in my theater room and the constant rumble from the movies made my tank vibrate apart(rock work that is). My inhabitants really got upset when it was movie time. Of course I have a THX system from an actual theater in my movie room. I own a movie theater so I can get good stuff.

I'd worry that all that rumbling would stress the seals on the tank!

Hmmm, I would worry that my neighbors might want to kill me right there on the driveway...
