Sump baffle design?
Which design would be better at stopping micro-bubbles from entering the display tank- The set of over-under-over baffles: A)after the drain and before the fuge or B)before the return and after the fuge?

After the Fuge, set them to be Under-Over-Under - This way if the water level drops below the over baffle height the water doesn't splash right above your pump making small bubbles.

How do you stop macro algaes, etc. in the fuge from blocking the under should a clump get loose? I think an over first sounds more "fool proof". Anyone agree/disagree? This is my first attempt at building a sump so I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible.

You can do it the other way. I did that with my first sump, and every time the water level would drop the water would splash over the last baffle and my pump would suck the bubbles in and make a ton of micro bubbles in the tank.
I would add one more baffle just to the end of the fuge. Something like: Over-Fuge-Over-Under-Over-Under

I'm going to rethink my plan. The last thing I want is micro-bubbles. My main reason for adding the sump is b/c I'm sick of all the equipment in the tank spewing bubbles. Thanks Meric

Here is the plan I finally went with in for my 75 gallon. I don't get any microbubbles back into the display until the water level drops down too much. With daily or every other day topoff, I get no bubbles at all. http://www.reefland.com/forum/attach...1&d=1132199474 Also, to keep the macro in the fuge section, I added a strip of egg crate just on top of the final baffle. Best wishes, -Jason

First off thanks to both of you. OK I think I'm going to do a "hybrid" of the two suggestions here. I'll follow (approx.) the plan Jason posted regarding baffle size etc. but I'll add an under before the return pump as Meric recommended- although I'm not positive it's absolutley necessary. I do daily FW top offs "religiously" to keep the SG as stable as possible. But rather be safe than sorry.
Jason how much evaporation do you have daily? Just curious b/c I get about 3/4-1 galllon a day.

I lose about 1 gallon per day to evaporation right now. At that rate, I "could" go about 3 days without top off, before the pump starts to shoot bubbles back into the display. I will be doing nightly top off from a 5 gallon bucket equipped with a drip line to the sump. Enjoy building your sump & baffles! -Jason

Thats the difference I lose over 9 Liters a day (2.5 gallons) and can have a 1 inch drop in my sump in 10 hours, usually while I'm at work.

I'm going to see how much room I have when I get everything "in front of me". If the extra (last) baffle takes up too much room I may ditch it. Thank you both very much!

Well I got the sump up and running. I'm happy w/ everything except I do have to add an "under" just before the return pump. I'm getting some splashing. I'm also going to cut the top of the "over" that creates the return chamber at a 45 degree angle in hopes of a smoother flow over.
