I am pretty sure your skimmer will work better if the output is completely ABOVE the water line of your sump.

i would have to agree if you have the room raise up the skimmer until the output is above the water line and this will give you more consistant skimming. variability in the water level will change the level in the skimmer due to back pressure. also i am of the opinion that rio pumps are junk so mabe an upgrade to a magdrive would be helpfull and should increase your flowrate and supply pressure.

Where does the water level belong in the skimmer in the clear tube or in the black canister? Will it work if I put a 45 degree fitting back below the surface of the water? Thank you for the help

the skimmer outlet needs to be completly above the waterline to remove any backpressure. so the answer is no. the water level is used to control the skimmate and there are lots of articles on that. the higher the water level the thinner the skimmate. all within reason.

That depends. Although I don't have a ETSS skimmer, I have a similarly manufactured one - AquaC EV series. According to the instructions on the newer model, the older model worked better with the water level slightly below the junction of the clear tube and black canister; however, the new models apparently work better with the water level right at the juction. So, you might check to see if there is any info available online from the manufacturer or a number you can call to find out the ideal water level for your brand/model.

Hmmm... now that the tank is full, I could convert the pool to saltwater...
