It seems that most people hand shape them.

ok was wondering, had read a couple of threads where they say "then pour into your mold" and was curious as to what they were using that would be easy to pull off since a lot o tghe recipes call for some type of cement and seems it would be difficult to get mold off once it dried

When I made some live rock I used sand as the mold. Put your sand in a rubber maid type of container or a small kids pool depending on how big and how much you plan on making. Water down the sand so that you can make your mold. The sand only needs to be dampend. By using sand you can make your own rocks any way you want.

Use sand or crushed coral, or crushed oyster shells.....sand alone can make a very cookie cutter design....the CC or oyster shell will give it a more natural look.

This is a good link to DIY Rock. I've been following it for a while. Most just free hand it and it looks as good as you shape it. This link shows some good tricks, especially how to make it extremely porous. |
