Talking Lame Fish-cube feeding trays

I don't know about the rest of you...but fish feeding time has become an almost pseudo-religious daily routine, with its ritual-like rinsings, carefully measured portions, and so forth.

Trusting this process to someone else while on vacation is a bit nerve-racking. I have 2 FOWLR tanks currently (20 gallon, 75 gallon).

Sooooo. I decided to simplify it for my fish-sitter this year. I thaw and rinse (with RO/DI water of course) about 4 frozen cubes from a variety pack by Ocean Nutrition. After several good rinsings in a brine shrimp net, I empty the contents into a shallow cup with some more RO/DI water in it. Then, with the help of an oral syringe, I divide up the contents into the 14 cube compartments, only filling them half way. Then I freeze it. Then I add a little mixture of veggie flake food, a little more RO/DI water, and freeze again.

TA-DA! Instant ready-to-feed cubes for my fish-sitter. They slowly dissolve, releasing the food and the fish gobble it up.

Just had to make sure to carefully mark the cube trays as "Fish Food" to avoid any confusion with our other ice cube trays.

I suppose after reading this, someone is going to tell me about a much easier way to accomplish the same results...but this is what I came up with.

Hope all your summer vacations go well!

Jason

Smaller Pill boxes work well too even for dry food.

Newbie questions, be warned:

Do you drop the frozen cube into the water or do you let the food thaw in a cup then pour the contents into the tank?

Why do you rinse the food? Is there harmful bacteria on the food that needs to be rinsed?

My concern with this is, isn't there some rule or law or something out there about refreezing food? I thought the food lost its cellular structure and hence went bad when it was thawed and refrozen.

I could be wrong but thats what the wife tells me about our food so I would think its the same with fish food.
