Hey Blennie!

Although it will save money making your own rock, it cannot provide the biological filtration that live rock can. I have seen DIY rock that will not allow coraline algae to grow on it etc.... Personnally I think it is a horrible bandwagon to get on. Of course its just my opinion.... *shrug*

I have about one hundred pounds of diy rock in my 180 and it's covered in coraline algae. It only took about five months. I do have about 80 pounds of live rock in the tank too. I used portland 2 and crushed oyster shells (chicken feed).

That is good that you had luck in gettting it to grow coraline. I have seen the opposite. So what do you think of the porosity of the rock? Besides the asthetics of the live rock its main purpose is for filtration. Without the benifits of biological filtration it is just taking up space.....

The porosity is very good on my diy rock. I used biodegradable packaging peanuts to help with the porosity. The diy rock won't be as good as the real thing but I think it will aid in filtration. Just my opinion I may be wrong!
