Background for a new aquarium

Hi everone,
This may seem a stupid question, but can anyone advice me on what type of paint would be suitable for painting the outside of the rear of my tank instead of applying the normal plastic type covering???????
Thanks

Larry

I second the question. I'm about to embark on a 180 reef setup in my living room and don't want my house guests to have to look at the plumbing.

I have never painted the glass, mostly because I was afraid of the paint chipping. What we have used most recently is a black felt material from Wal-Mart (buy it by the foot in the crafts section). This material is easily super glued to the tanks plastic frame and works very well.

Krylon Fusion. It is reef safe and will not chip. I have painted numerous tanks with it and never had a problem. Just make sure you clean it extremely well first. I use Acetone and a scrubber pad. Let dry for at least and hour, mask and paint. It will take several coats to cover completely so that light cannot make it through, but the results are worth the extra effort. You only have to wait 5 or 10 minutes between coats, so it goes fairly fast.

Re: Background for a new aquarium

I use, and reccomend, using a rustoleum enamel. It is oil based and flat black, (it looks glossy from teh inside).

I used a 'cigar' roller, or weenie roller, used less the a half pint. There was no clean up necessary, and I was able to recoat it three times in one day, I taped off theplastic trim, and when I was done just peeled the tape off and it was good to go..

No overspray, no drips, no clean up needed.

Good luck,

bill

Re: Background for a new aquarium

i use matte black generic spray from wal-mart, works fine and only cost 96cents a can.

on acrylic tanks i'll scuff up the back first with 220 (your never gunna see the back again anyways so), just make sure you sand it evenly or your scuff marks will show.

glass tanks i just clean it real well first.
