is there any cheap way of getting strong light without buyin halides?

I've been down that road, never panned out and I ended up with a coralife fixture w/ 2- 250w MH, 2 -96 watt actinic and 4 moon lights...

Yes there is but that depends on the depth of your tank. I'm a huge fan of T5 lighting in tanks 18" deep or less. I have great growth and color with both lps and sps corals and I use a 50/50 mixture of super actinic and daylight bulbs. You can get retro kits that come with ballasts and bulbs for a little over a hundred dollars. CoralVue Lighting and Aquarium Products is where I ordered mine. Since using them for about 4 months I have noticed some rusting on the reflectors and may upgrade them to icecaps down the road.
