TOTW 8-13-07 10G Sump/Fuge
I've decided that my tank could benefit from having a sump/fuge due to its small size. Since I'm new at this; it would help me keep water parameters in check and in general, stablelize water quality better. Besides I might like the look of it.
So, I bought the tank: $10 I plan on doing the baffles/partitions with acrylic glass. This is where I need help. How would I go about connecting the sump to the tank. I have no drilling tools, nor do I have the skills (I think). Is there a way to do this without drilling any of the tanks? I mean to put the tanks besides one another. Re: 10G Sump/Fuge
Hi Yuri,
![]() The sump would go under the tank, and can be connected with an external overflow box. Check out this article: http://www.reefland.com/rho/2006/05/overflows_sumps.php |

Re: 10G Sump/Fuge
Hi there Reef,
Thanks for the welcome (I'm glad I joined this forum, has a lot of helpful peopl) and the link. Good information. I forgot to mention that with this set up there is no room for the sump underneath the stand. It doesn't fit there. So I need a design that will work with the sump of either side of the display tank. I'm also worried about spilling, since the tank is kept in a 2nd floor room with wood floor. As for drilling the tank, I don't have the tools, nor the skills. But I'm sure that people have a setup that works that way. I really need help with this. Thanks, Yuri. |

There is no way to set this up side by side without drilling.

Re: 10G Sump/Fuge
Sure you can put it side-by-side. Here's what I did.
Basically all I did was use an overflow made with PVC pipes and used a MJ1200 powerhead to pump water back to the main tank. Simple, cost efficient and effective. Thanks for trying to help me. |

Re: 10G Sump/Fuge
Well, in this case the sump is actually lower than the tank, that that allows you to overflow from the display to the sump. If they were side by side (on the same level) this couldn't be done without drilling.
Glad to see you got it set up though. ![]() |

You still could use the side by side (on the same level) design and use too pump/powerhead of the same force rating and tubing of the same length. Although I have not seen anybody do this, perhaps b/c of the great chance of overflow.
Thanks. The great thing I like about it is that is it pretty cheap. lol |

Re: TOTW 8-13-07 10G Sump/Fuge
The problem with that is you can never get exactly the same amount of flow produced by both pumps. But again, this is a null point because your application is working just fine.

Re: TOTW 8-13-07 10G Sump/Fuge
I examined that point, I believe the only way to asure such thing would be to have 2 pumps rated at the same amoutn of force and have same length tubing.
And of course, since the tanks would be side by side then they would have to be placed at the same height. I wouldn't wanna try this little project though. |

Re: TOTW 8-13-07 10G Sump/Fuge
2 problems:
1. Even though pumps are rated the same, the don't produce exactly the same. 2. Pumps are going to get dirty and accumulate build-up at different rates which will impact output rates differently. You could never get them perfectly balanced and keep them that way. ![]() |

Great work!
In the event of a power failure, does the 10 gallon tank hold everything that siphons from the larger tank? |
