Need ideas to waterproof the inside of my cabinet stand..
Hi guys,I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm looking to protect the inside of my aquarium cabinet from water and salt spray, since that's where the sump and skimmer will be. I was in Lowe's and I saw a two-part epoxy garage floor sealer that I think might work. Has anyone ever used this? Any other ideas would be a great help! ![]() |

I'm not sure it is foolproof, but I applied several thick coats of polyurethane to the interior of my stands(both current and previous) and havent's seen any sign of water/salt damage. I focused on coating cut edges of plywood to eliminate water and salt in between ply's. I also added a bottom to the inside of the stand which is caulked to a lip around the perimeter about 2 or 3 inches high to catch any stray leakes or spills. No problems, so far, knock on wood.

Re: Need ideas to waterproof the inside of my cabinet stand..
I've used 2 part epoxy on my garage floor and it is amazing stuff but I'm not sure you could apply this stuff easily unless you were to do it outdoors, this stuff has some nasty fumes even with the front and back garage doors open!
My thoughts are that if you try this in the house and you're applying it in an enclosed cabinet, someone will find you crumpled in your cabinet or you'll come out babbling nonsense! not to mention what will happen if you're doing it with a tank of fish on it :slap: ![]()

Whoa! Thanks for the warning on this one!! That's pretty scary stuff! I think I'm going to prime it with Kilz and use white Valspar instead--it'll be much safer, I think. Right now my tank is new so I don't have any fish in it yet--still planning out all my gear. Thanks again! ![]() |
