Simple is always the way I've done things. One reason is because until recently I have always had a much smaller budget. Simple has always worked for me there isn't a bunch that can go wrong. I should just stick with what I know.

I am curious about your setup though.

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

Here are the pictures of rock that Kevin sent me a while back when I was going to order for my own system.

I'm hoping he still gets this as it was 6 months ago.

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

Today I started thinking about fish selection.
Here is what I'm thinking.

1 tang Either Zebrasoma flavescens or Ctenochaetus strigosus
1 Neocirrhites armatus
A pair of Gramma loreto
A pair of Premnas biaculeatus aquacultured or A pair of Amphiprion ocellaris also aquacultured
1 Salarias fasciatus

Possibly 1 male Pterapogon kauderni and two females.

With all of them that's 10 fish in a 180. Stocking that many would take some time. The majority of them are relatively small but the Zebramosas get much bigger than the rest and I've seen them not play so nice. The tang would most likely be the last addition anyway though. There are a lot of pod eaters and that also concerns me without a gravity fed refugium. I plan on ordering the livestock and rock from Kevin because quite frankly I trust him. Everything will still be quarantined though.

That is really nice rock!!! If I am not mistaken, that is either Pukani or Kaelini, very nice, large pieces with alot of holes!!!

Nice list!!! I think you will be good with that amount, you may want to check with Lee tho, he is the fish guru around here!!!
If it was me, I would go with the Bristletooth, they just seem to have a great personality.

I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure he told me Pukani was what that was.

Maybe Lee will cruise up this way on the fish list.

You will probably be very happy with the Pukani. The thing I like about it the size of the pieces versus the weight. You won't have to buy as much!!!

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

I spoke with Kevin today and he didn't think I needed more than 100lbs of this rock for a 180. His justification is that the pieces are so large and so light that they fill up much more space than normal. Good news because that frees up extra funds for stocking. I'm used to having somewhere around 2lbs of rock per gallon.

When I spoke with him before it was around $6.00/lb.

I don't know yet with this order.

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

Today the RO/DI and one set of replacement filters arrived.
The unit is from Air Water Ice and is the Typhoon 5 stage with asov. They sent a free tds meter with it.

I also went to HD and picked up some things that I'll need.
The light is for the refugium it's a LOA 65w fixture ...the same one I'm using on my fuge and I'm going to drill tons of holes in the top to let heat escape.
Other than that I got a few powerstrips, some extension cords, digital timers for the lights and I needed some zip ties.

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

The aquarium is here. I drove to Tennessee/glass cages to pick it up last night. I'm not sure if anyone that works there is a legal immigrant but they do quality work and it looks great! I am painting the back and sides this evening. Will post some pics of that later.

I have 1" bulkheads in the back for returns because that was the smallest hole they could drill but the locline only comes in 4 sizes. 1/4" 1/2" 3/4" and 2.5". I need a threaded 1" male to 3/4" female reducer to go inside the 1" threaded bulkhead so that I can attach 3/4" locline to it.

Reducer Bushing, 3/4" x 1/2"

I assume that part is what I need right?

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

I think that is what you need, but shouldn't it be a 1"x3/4". A 1" and a 3/4" bulkhead are the same size hole I believe Chuck. If Kevin was around he could tell you for sure.

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

Yeah sorry I posted the wrong link. Lowes had what I needed. I got it painted and my overflows finished. I'm tired after driving the majority of the morning and still have calculus to do.

Looking good Chuck! I have a question about the notches/teeth at the top of your overflow, it looks like fewer, but deeper cuts. Is that by design or by experiment?

Re: New 180 gallon system build TOTW 9-6-07

Well I want the water line above the lip going around the top of the aquarium. They are longer than my other 75 gallon but that's because the overflow also attaches at the top underneath the lip. I may shave about 1/4" off of each tooth that isn't a support and add some more if needed.
