Making your own 2 part and Mg supplements
I was speaking with a chem professor here about the aquarium being built. We got to talking about supplements and what I dose in mine he now wants to try and make a Ca/Alk 2 part and some Mg. I'm not a chemist and have no clue how he would go about doing that but I'd like some background as to exactly what these are made of. If he can successfully make it and I can test it on a small nano or something it'd be nice to have around.

Just a word of caution. Most calcium chloride is made by Dow. Dow has decided they no long have the need for the bromide that is usually removed. They will now be leaving the bromide where they found it. This basicly means that the amout of bromide will be very very high by comparison to NSW. This change is from 150ppm to 8000ppm. What this will effect is still up in the air.

I just figured with a chemical room the size of my condo he could come up with something.

I'm sure he can, and I'll bet it will be LAB GRADE, which SHOULDN'T have the bromide.

Yup, that too! If it is for the school though, maybe they can make it an assignment for the chem students. That way Chuck can get the supplies, and the school can account for the usage in not only manufacturing it, but also using the process as an educational tool.
Heck, he may just end up with the best of the best for his supplements. |
