A little LR cleaner TOTW 1-5-08

Well, I got tired of using a turkey baster to blow off my LR, so I had an idea. I had a spare penquin 1140 powerhead laying around and I know a lot of folks use those to blow off rock. So while at Lowes I picked up a few things to make it easier and not get my hands wet. Here is what I got. Some 1/2" cpvc pipe, a street 45, a cap and a couple "t"s.

First thing I did was sand the cap so it fit inside a 1/2" PVC 45 fitting.

Then I cut a piece of 1/2" pvc for a handle. Then cut a small piee of CPVC to connect the cap to the "T".

Next I cut a small section of the CPVC pipe and placed it into the street 45 and then put that into the "T".

Next I took a small piece of tubing and connected the CPVC pipe and the powerhead together. I used tywraps so it wouldn't come apart.

And last I cut a section of CPVC pipe the length I needed and put it in the open end of the "T". Now I have a small blowoff gun and can keep my hands out of the water.

Nothing is glued so it is easy to change as I need to. After using it for the first time, I am happy with it, excep I think I will make handle longer and put the powerhead closer to the spray end so it is in the water better. What do you folks think?

If I'm correct, I think that is the rock holder/structure he was making for his tank. He showed it on a thread I started about how to stack rocks in a tank. It was pretty cool. At least it looks like that...I might be incorrect. LOL

PS I think it's a darn cool invention!

Very true and I envy him for that.

The cool thing is, once I get my 90 going, I should have two extra Penguin 1150 power heads at my disposal! Looks like I'm might be tryin' Tim's trick after all.

Re: A little LR cleaner TOTW 1-5-08

Thanks guys. Yes the other creation is my LR stand. Here is the full shot of it:

I guess all those years of being an engineer are starting to pay off now.

I also have a DIY skimmer testing right now and I am working on some sort of overflows for the tank. I'll post those as I get them completed. I have to DIY and save money or else the wife puts the kabash on my hobbies. Something about all my hobbies being too expensive, not sure what she means!!!
