pool filter...

my dad replaced his pool filter a few days ago and gave me the old one. I was thinking of possibly using it for a rain water storage tank.

the problem is it was used for baquasil (sp?) and then chlorine. how would I go about cleaning the tank so no trace chemicals leech out of the plastic. will chemicals leech from the plastic? my dad told me he had to use some kinda of wash to remove the baquasil before he could use chlorine...

figured someone here would know about pool filters and could shed some light on the issue.

Re: pool filter...

chlorine is not a very stable chemical when exposed to sunlight or even air. I wouldn't worry about it at all... now the other chemicals... those I would worry about.

Not sure what the Baquasil you mention is though, and if you find out what the other chemicals used were; you can check the MSDS on them and find out how to make them less toxic.

Re: pool filter...

sorry the right spelling is Baquacil and their website FAQ is here BAQUACIL Pool Care System : Product FAQs.

Quote:
The active ingredient in BAQUACIL SANITIZER AND ALGISTAT is polyhexamethylene biguanide. It's so gentle it is used in some contact lens cleaning solutions.
Also used their BAQUACIL Oxidizer which has hydrogen peroxide in it. The cleaner he used was likely the BAQUACIL SAND FILTER CLEANER and I couldn't find anything on that chemical makeup.

Re: pool filter...

Probably a good soak for a week with fresh water out on the back porch would be fine.

I'd probably change the water every other day, just to help, but it sounds like everything used was pretty mild.
