Post Price breakdown for 180 gallon tank...

OK, here's the price list:

Code:
  • Respirator x 1 $33.96
  • Liquid Nails Heavy Duty x 5 $1.78 each
  • 5 pound box of 3" deck screws x 1 $18.97 each
  • 3/4" 4'x8' oak plywood x 2 $47.97 each
  • 3/4" 4'x8' pine plywood x 3 $22.77 each
  • 1/2" '4x4' pine plywood x 1 $9.75 each
Total - tax $235.83

I am going to buy the fiberglass and epoxy from here

The price list for this is:

Code:
  • Fiberglass cloth 10oz x 38" YD #55428052 x 7 YD $5.65
  • SUPERBOND ACT STANDARD - QT #65600184 $11.50
  • SUPERBOND RESIN-QT #65401084 $11.50
Total - shipping $62.55

Complete total not including the glass or shipping costs: $360.93

Fortunatly I can buy this is pieces and not all at once like with a regular aquarium.

I think you will need more than a quart for the fiberglass resin. What size tank were you building again?

Actually, it is 2 quarts; one quart activator and one quart resin. I do think that I will need one gallon total, so you can double the price of the epoxy.

It is a 180 gallon tank, 4' long x 2' deep x 3' high.

That sounds fine then, I was thinking it was around that.

Why pine and oak 3/4" plywood? Why not one or the other? The oak is for the sides?

The oak is for the sides and the front. The pine is for the back and bottom. I figured that it would be foolish to spend the money for all oak if I am only going to see three sides.

Just was wondering why? I mean the cost of a 180 isn't going to be too far from what you are going to spend... if ... you get it right the first time, don't make any bad cuts, have any wayward screws, etc. Not to mention the 100 or so man hrs. you are going to spend. I am in no way trying to discourage you, just curious.

One word: FUN!

Well that and the fact that you cannot usually buy a 180 gallon glass tank in pieces. There is no way that I could afford to buy all of this at once or buy a glass tank in this size. Also, since it is a rather unusual size I figured it would cost more since it would have to be custom made.

Also, I am a die hard DIY'er. If it can be made, you can bet I'll try. I might go bancrupt in the process, but I'll have the time of my life doing it.

Yep, that's what I figured. I have the same bug at times, just have to try to build it first. I considered what you are doing, well actually what that guy who posts to GARF did with the big wall unit tank. I decided I don't have the time to committ to a project that big and still remain patient enough to do it right. Good luck to you. Keep us posted.
