Keeping livestock out of my return pipe

As you can see by the pictures below I got a return line which is wide open with nothing to stop livestock from getting in there. If I remember correctly that pvc pipe is 1/4". What are some good ideas of ways to keep livestock out of that pipe opening?

WDL...I use a mesh screen to keep the egrets from scooping my precious koi and cats from my pond outside. You can probably cut a little bit of this and use a plastic strap around the PVC.

    Example: http://www.pondbiz.com/home/pb1/page...g_wstakes.html

Thanks for the good idea. I'm guessing that this stuff is not a metal because I don't want any rust

    Reverse Flow Pre-Filter Sponge
Put a small rubberband on the open end.
