Some HQI DIY ??
Does anyone know the international codes or UL listed codes for the different lighting sockets: mogul, hqi, pc, etc.?
Are the lengths of the different wattage hqi bulbs the same, ie same socket? Those who have hqi pendants or fixtures, can you give me the etched code on the protective glass, or is it unmarked? Does the glass have to be just tempered or UV shielded as well (all glass has some UV shielding properties, right?)? Seems to me that an appropriately sized halogen fixture from HD, with the appropriate retro'd socket would be an economical alternative to PFO pendants. HD carries some fixtures of similar size to PFO pendants, with the glass, power cord, a pair around $45 (orange standing shoplights). If the HQI sockets are cheap, <$20 each, one could have a pair of pendants for less then one PFO. I know that the ballast/transformer part of the HD fixture would be scrapped. Your help is appreciated, thanks, Bill. Last edited by billzie; 01-13-2005 at 02:37 AM. |

If I'm not mistaken the glass can be had at any glass shop on order. Tempered 3/16" glass should do the trick. If wrong, let me know.
The sockets should have a universally known code, and should be available at any electric supply house on order. Bill. Last edited by billzie; 01-13-2005 at 02:37 AM. |

Methinks I'm being misunderstood.
I know the socket in the HD fixture is not the proper size, hence, I know the bulb in the HD fixture is junkola. To my knowledge all lighting sockets have a universal code applicable, so that ordering replacement parts is easy. I need the code to order the correct socket. I believe the transformer in the HD units is not acceptable for HQI usage, never mind that I'm not matching a wattage, I'm considering the size of the fixture. I still plan on using an electronic ballast. For 3x the money, I'll get a ballast easy to wire into the fixture, save on electricity, have a reliable warranty, no heat in the stand, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm handy, but, it the fixture thing works out I'll save enough to get the ballasts at similar cost to PFO + mag ballast. I may be getting the bulbs from an overseas trip to Germany, I'll see if they're cheaper (have to be). Bill. Last edited by billzie; 01-13-2005 at 02:37 AM. |

UL Codes
What you might want to do is try calling Granger Elec Supply Co They would know or have the info on the UL codes you are looking for. I am looking to find their phone number now and will post it as soon as I get it.

Truth be know I found all the info I needed shortly thereafter. I made roughly two dozen MH-DE/HQI fixtures for 150 & 250 watt bulbs. About half of those were also fully wired ballast plug and play systems. The other half were varying levels of completeness kits. All were done via word of mouth through a couple of LFS over a six month period. I never "made" any money out of them considering the man hours I had to put into each unit, and then they became more popular and companies like PFO started pricing their systems lower, followed by several companies offerings of suspect manufacture. I still have my original units, however they're in storage. I haven't had a running tank for over two years now. I'm pretty much out of the hobby for now. Other things in life have taken me out (NO pets clause in apartment lease, marriage, travel job, relocation, car projects, etc.) I still have to get rid of one tank combo (125g Euro tank by Odell, oak ply stand by me). I occassionally list my 200g rr Oceanic combo for sale but not willing to take any less that what I have in it (bought used). Later, Bill. Last edited by billzie; 01-13-2005 at 02:36 AM. |
