1/2" glass strenght
Have a friend with 5' X 5' sheet of tempered 1/2" glass, wants to build custom tank glass front only. How do we determine if glass will hold up, actual water depth maybe 48" to 56". Any ideas? tia

Give me until Thursday or Friday and i'll have an exact answer. I'm going to school for a BS in Mech. Engr., so i have the answer. I just have too much to do before Thursday to have time to calculate. I'll get back to you.

It is my understanding that 1/2" glass is only sufficient for up to 28" deep water.

In case you dont know you can not re-cut tempared glass.
I would say that 1/2" wouldnt be enough to handle the water pressure of a 5' high tank.

Yea, if we could cut it I would push for 10'L X 30" high! Oh well, you know how it is, you have this thing sitting around starring at you and you wonder, how could this thing be applied to my obsessive hobby? I do that with just about every piece of scrap or junk I see. Sometimes a little imagination pays off!

You could make a fantastic table aquarium. Nice hardwood sides with the 1/2 5x5 top would look sweet! You could even get a shallow beach area going for the crabs and shallow water animals. Use 4 VHO's around the sides, ya I could find something to do with that... just need a place to put it! If you didn't live 3000 miles away I'd buy it off you!

Firefish, it's farther than you think, the friend with the glass is in Hawaii! You want it Fed Ex? I'm going out there next month, I'll run your idea by him, make a nice tidepool table, I like it. Thanks for the thought.

Thanks for the offer David but I think the shipping on that glass alone would be more then If I bought the glass here. Thanks again
