I'm looking for a tap to make a hole in PVC. The hole is for the typical brass "ice-maker" valve to screw into. What size tap should it be? Thanks!

Probally 1/8 NPT. without seeing it its hard to tell. Make sure its a pipe tap and not a standard tap, there is a HUGE diffrence.

Only the outlet side is "standard" (1/4" compression I think) the inlet can be various sizes, male, female, compression, npt, etc...
Don't forget you need to use the appropriate size drill prior to tapping. As for size, take the valve with you when you go to get the tap and match it up to be sure. Tim Last edited by hllywd; 01-30-2002 at 08:09 PM. |

FYI
Tap drill sizes for common NPT taps
1/4 = 7/16 3/8 = 37/64 1/2 = 23/32 3/4 = 59/64

Thanks for all the help!
organicreefer, Nope, it is definitely not a dump question. I'm glad you mentioned it again. Somebody else said the same to me. I was not aware brass will KILL all the inverts in the tank. I just need to find a plastic valve now.....

Read a post somewhere that stuck in my mind about tapping pvc.
The pearson said to buy a metal threaded end the size that you want the tapped hole to be, drill the hole a little smaller, and thread the fitting in real slow and straight. Remove it, clean and you have a threaded hole and the make shift taps are cheap and it makes it easy to get only the ones you want when you want them. Seems plausable sence PVC is so soft. Not any experiance here. Just something that stuck in my mind incase I need a threaded hole. |

teo-2112, that was me
. You can pick up a set of NPT plugs from a hdwr or auto parts store for about $10. The taps on the other hand may cost $10 or more each. I have done this and it works well, just takes a little bit of elbow grease. However, when I can afford them I will be gettting the Unibits, taps/drillbits to add to my collection of tools. Also, this diy doesn't work with acrylic very well at all. FWIW, Bill. |
