DIY protein skimmer
hey guys
I am getting ready to build a dual protein skimmer that is pretty basic. It is pretty much a airation tube with a collection cup and that is about it. Within the airation tube there is a lime wood air stone and this goes to a hefty air pump. There are two of these side by side. Do you guys think that this would be effective for a fifty five gallon reef or does it need to be more complex than this. What are some good DIY protien skimmer sights. Thanks |

Any chance you can throw together a mickey mouse diagram for us to get a better understanding of your idea? Complexity is HIGHLY overrated IMO and simplicity is king in my books so DO not get discouraged from all these high tech devices....put your plan in motion...tinker and ask questions but be specific...My thoughts of a simple skimmer is a heavy duty air pump and a couple of air lift style skimmers you could just stick a pipe in the SB and cut a opening (hole, slit...watever) in the pipe just above the SB for water intake and a opening just below the water line for water output put a make shift collection cup on it and bammo yer done! Very cheap, energy effecient, and easy, and the effectiveness will be mostly reliant upon your size of pipe (diam) and air flow wich is easily controlld with valves and with a good air pump you could probably add more if it works. If you want something that is a tad bit more complex but much more effecient then I would build a Counter Current skimmer, check this out.
