Someone mentioned a modification to the Skilter 250 that'd make it work better. Anyone have a link?

Hi Mangrove!
Welcome to Reefland!
Most people do not use Skilters for saltwater aquarium, they are one of those pieces of equipment available on the market that people are often directed to from Local Stores. From a skimming standpoint, they just don't do good. Anyhow, the only mod I can think of is adding an airstone into the skimmer tube to give it more bubbles. This would also allow you to take off the airline from the pump attached to it and cut back on the noise. Scott Z. |

I have to agree with Scott. In our experience, Skilters are very ineffective, noisy and about worthless. I had one intially ~6 years ago based on the recommendation from our LFS. That was in the days before knowing anything about saltwater and the importance of a skimmer. Now that I know even less about saltwater, I know enough to appreciate our EuroReef!
Given that you probably already have one, let's see what we can do to make it better. I think Scott is on the right track with an air stone. I've heard most people have the best results with the small wooden diffusers. The critical part is making sure the bubble size is very small to effectively extract the excess nutrients. Let us know how it turns out... Doug

Do not know if this is on topic but reading this thread just saved me from buying a skilter. I have a skimmer which I am not happy with the required pump is a Sens 500gph pump which rest on the bottom of the tank. It runs hot and the skimmer has a tendency to over flow on to the floor. I am looking for a inexpesive replacement. Is the ViaAqua Multi-Skimmer any use Seems to be very inexpensive.

Ralphwolfe,
If you current have a cheap skimmer, I wouldn't move to another or you'll experience the same type of frustrations with problems and ineffecient skimming. If I were you I would look into a Bak Pak or better yet an AquaC. |
