TOTW 5-10-05 12V DC fan wiring

Hi all!

Looking for input on something I'm going to try to accomplish with cooling fans in a canopy. I have obtained a few Nidec Beta V TA450DC fans (130 cfm @ 53dBA). I've figured out the obvious stuff, as in where to hook up the 12V + and the GND, but what are the yellow and green leads for? I figure one is for a tach and the other is for rpm regulation? But how do they work and which one is what? The Nidec site had no detailed information on the subject.

The signal option on this fan is -34, (four lead), but if anyone has an example circuit, that would help immensely.

Thanks in advance, all!

Hey Mick

I would email nidec and tell them your case...theres not more to that model number? Also it being a beta model makes me curious anyway. Maybe it takes a special transformer to run. Id email nidec though b4 I go to radio shack and drop a few bucks from one of them dewds advice

Can you take a photo Micko

I just had one of my two PC fans installed in my hood break. It just stopped working, but the other one is still working. They are the small 3 inch fans. I took out the one, but now need another fan...as one fan is not enough to keep my tank cool, especially in the summer months coming up.

I did get a bigger DC fan, 12V 0.33A to run it. I will glue/screw that in and see how it runs. I will be running both fans on a 500mA transformer from Radio Shack.

Well if they were used in computers the yellow lead would be the signal for rpm, red +, black -, but the green has me stumped.

Now i looked them up on the net and the ones I saw did not have a green lead.

The signal option on this fan is -34, (four lead), but if anyone has an example circuit, that would help immensely.

When plugged into a PC motherboard that has the option, the yellow wire is used as a tach. When the tach (or temperature measurement from motherboard) reach a certain point, voltage is pulled from the green wire at a reduced rate to decrease fan noise.

Your not going to be able to rig that setting for a hood, but what you can do is step down the voltage going to the fan for less noise, albeit at a lesser air volume.
