DIY Carbon Holder TOTW 2-28-05
Here is a easy way to hold carbon in your sump or place it over the air output on you skimmer collector to prevent odors from escaping. This is the end of a leg on a old pair of stockings (now guys the women don't take too kindly when you cut the feet off a good pair). Even when I told her no one sees the feet anyway

Great job Kevin
I've been using it for awhile now as well.Sometimes I steal a new pair when she's not looking but I'll never admit it.

Rocky,
Now I know you don't need the feet LMAO Pictures please NOT! Gene, I'm going to have to go back to work first. She is working outside the home for the first time since 1974 (and I'm doing house cleaning and laundry for the first time since then )I couldn't even find the dishwasher, vacuum, and washer/dryer let alone run them (could I tell you some horror stories LOL) Regards, Kevin

Kevin,
I think I can relate to this. When I first stoped working completely two years ago,my wife said that I will be in charge of the house(Thanks ).I cleaned and did some laundry for awhile, did some remodeling, bla bla, just to stay busy Now I relish the time when I'm alone in the house and can play with my tanks while my granddaughter taking a nap.Anyway, just keep me in mind and yea,go back to work ![]()

carbon totally submerged?
Ok I know this is an old thread but I still use the "pantyhose method" on my tank that is
I just wanted to see if you guys totally submerge your Carbon or if you try the half submerged. Is there any benefits to surface skimm your water through the carbon?

Excellent topic to chose for TOTW Rocky.
![]() Here is the million dollar question; what color stocking do you use Rocky?? ![]() No really...What is the best place to add "carbon-n-a-stocking" in a system that does not have a place especially made for it? Obviously a place where the water is going to pass through it and not just flow around it but where is that place? |

I usually put my carbon-n-a-stocking right where the over flow dumps the water into the sump, totally submerged. Lots of turbulence and lots of water. Don't know if that's the right spot, but it seems to work for me.

I once made the stupid mistake of finding carbon real cheap "in bulk" online. I made my own large PVC inline carbon tube. Inline with the return from my pump. Turned out that this carbon gave me a hell of a phosphate problem, cyano bactera was everywhere and was the demise of some of my favorite corals.
I was not using RO/DI water at that time though and for some dumb reason thought that carbon (in great quantities) would do the trick. I haven't used carbon in years and use UV and RO/DI and not a single problem since. Just a stupid story. |
