    5000g pool/reef prop system

A friend of mine in Orlando is building an inground pool but it will be a reef tank the total volume will be approx 5000g and it will have 2 - 200 gallon surges. I dont have all the specifics because everytime I go over his house we get so sidetracked

Sorry bout the pics but these where taken lastnite and my flash obviously wasnt powerful enough to spread over the coverage of the whole span of the pool.

    His main tanks

He has a 300g and a 100g (I think these are the volumes) these tanks are all tied into his prop system above too....for one large system.

    His equipment room

Behind the two main tanks is an equipment room.....he needs to make a sign that says enter at your own risk....entering could risk electrocution, riptides, typhoonal swells, and many marine animals that may swallow you hole!

Is he doing this for fun or for business?

I can't imagine the maintenance and cost to keep up a huge pool.

Anyways, nice systems but I can't make out what the pool looks like.

Talk about addicted to reefing! I must admit it sounds cool, but imagine the cost. He must be rich or opening up a seaworld or something. Is the pool going to have underground viewing as well? You'll definately have to take some pictures during the day.

Actually, a large outside pool will run very little cost I think. No lighting or electricity costs necessary since they are powered by the sun. You would have some very stable temps from the large volume of water. The pumps for flow would run the biggest maintenance expenses besides water changes. Now, water changes would be a significant challenge in itself if one chooses to do them.

The construction cost and set up (can you say live rock by the truck?) would be quite costly, but shouldn't be so much more than those guys setting up 750 gal tanks indoors. Sounds like a great project. Really want to see this go all the way.

Looks and sounds cool, but one quick question...

If it's an in-ground pool, why has he poured a concrete slab above ground?

Did he get a little over zealous?

Two is only loosely associated with two by a plus sign and therefore doesn't enter the equation at all since it is only there by mere complicity. We shouldn't count it and leave well enough alone.

I think the most expensive part of a pool system like that would be the plumbing as dgasmd said. You would need enough to turn over 5000 gal of water several times a hour, not to mention the huge amounts of salt you would need to get that salinity up. Top off would be a ***** as well... not to mention the rock... oh lord the rock!! Maybe he will make his own live rock, or sink a small boat in there or something. who knows.

Oh and let us not forget that it gets real hot in Orlando and evap would hurt on the water bill. Half the time the city doesn't even want you to run your sprinklers in the day. And With a RO/DI running 100 gpd it would still waste a arse load of water. But all and all I'd do it!

If you could wade in the pool it would be neat and practical for propin actualy..building a plastic structure over it to keep the rain out would not be hard kinda like a greenhouse .It really dont cost much to build a pool that size if you do it yourself mabey a few k or less..same as alot have in less than 10% of the volume

something this big could be hard to keep from becoming a swamp pool though without alot of work & 10,000 or more snails alot of adult conchs etc. just think of all the diatoms cyano and such it will get
I asume the surges are Carlson type.. 2 200 gal WOW!

plus if he adds about 3-5 10,000 gph pumps it would be sweet

will he build the walls above ground then just backfill around them to keep out rain run off?
