hey gang,
thinking again saw ( a looooooong time ago ) a plan for a surge device that used a paint tray and springs to control the surge. Anyone ever heard of this or tried it? Going to start on the canopy soon and want to try to include plans for this as well. Thanks David ------------------ Don't think so much....it takes the fun out of life!!!! |

Nuff,
I'm not familiar with the one you're asking about but here is a link to a ready-made one that is only $74. There have been a lot of posts on ReefCentral about this device and all have been favorable. http://www.mich.com/~bjlavoie/surge.html Ninong ------------------ Irrational Exuberance! I was out that way in May. Didn't make it to beautiful Sonoma County but did spend some time in that neighboring county, you know, the less famous wine making region, the county that's a four letter word. Actually, I lived in the Bay Area <sigh> for 21 years (including two years in Monterey) and just moved back to Louisiana last year. ninong...
sorry to hear about your exodus from paradise...the grapes are changing colors now, quite a beautiful time of the year! another thing we say about our "neighbors:" its a great place to make auto parts, not wine! so why the move? im sure LA is quite an amazing place, but i can't believe it beats this side of the country cheers, t |

Back to the surge device for a minute, I've been drawing up some plans....I think I have come up with something easy, adjustable, and most importantly, cheap. Just smack me if you've seen something like it before. What do you guys think about using a container (like rubbermaid, bucket, anything will do) Using a toilet flusher style rubber flapper valve, and connect a float with a lift chain. Hook up a small pump from the sump (maxijet 1200 size) flowing into the container. Once the water gets to the preferred level the float lifts the chain, pulls up the flapper valve, and swoosh. Use PVC to direct the flow as wanted. You could even use a float switch to turn off the pump should the float/flapper malfunction. I wouldn't care as I think I am gonna try putting a small 1-2 gallon system under my 12" hood between the MH's, so if it overflows, it just drops into the main tank. Whats everyone think? Simple and affordable. Sometimes I wonder if I am too into this.....

Oh, winemakers uh . T- you have to give credit to us here in Livermore. My mom worked for Wente Vineyards Winery for 8 years.... Sonoma is REALLY nice though..

I have always heard stay away from mechanical surge devices.
I remember reading in AFM or online a couple years back about a system that Charles Delbeek was saying they use at the Waikiki Aquarium, but I can't seem to find it anywhere., but it was a simple gravity/siphon device that used a pump to fill a container above the tank, then when the water raised high enough the siphon would drain most of its contents into the display tank. I remember it was one of those.. "its so simple why didn't I think of that" things. [This message has been edited by icemark (edited 08-02-2000).] |

The link I gave in my post above is to a relatively small (2g or 4g) surge device that is reportedly very quiet and has had many favorable reviews on other boards. It is also very inexpensive ($74 & $94). HTH Ninong ------------------ Irrational Exuberance! |
