Post Sump Skimmer

What is a good inexpensive skimmer for a sump? I am a newbie and I have purchased a aqua c remora but it is a HOB. I am building a sump and would like to place it in there.

That is a good skimmer, why not use it????why not just hang it on the sump instead of the tank

I am hanging it on the sump. Yes from what everbody says it is a Great skimmer. The problem seems to be with the pump being non UL and overloading and shocking the tank I actually built the sump last night using the skimmer in a hang on mode (on sump). Makes the sump sort of high, 27-1/2" to be exact. I had to modify the stand somewhat to make it work. I think it will work super, I will create some pixs and a DIY sheet for people in the future wanting to use this configuration.

I also have a Remora Pro hanging on my sump for my 100 gallon. Works great. I am seriously thinking about replacing the Rio 1400 though. Any sugestions? I was thinking Maxi-Jet 1200, but that might not have enough power.

I have and always will use a grounding probe, simple device but functional. I just hate the fact that I purchased a faulty device I will buy a new pump for the sump skimmer and use the grounding probe.

the remora has a rio800? i belive the maxijet 900 won't work as well. use the 1200. the rio delivers more power due to design even if its a crappy pump. The venturi in the maxi causes loss of power so u aren't getting whats rated. For the rio1140? I would use a mag2-or 4? Whichever matches gph closest.. If you get the maxi900 and don't like it use it for a powerhead and use a mag2 also just put it on the bottom of sump and plump it up if its to powerful?

Why would you use a venturi on an Aqua C? they are spray induction skimmers no venturi needed.

the venturi is for the powerhead to make it work . It won't work without it. Nothing to do with skimmer. It goes on the intake of the maxijet so it can pull in water and has an airline hooked to it also so you can adjust flow of powerhead.

Angel 1,

You are correct. Aqua C skimmer don't use the venturi options on PH's. This is the main reason I am going to buy the Remora Pro for my reef.

I just making sure its clear. If you are using a maxijet pump you need the venturi attachment to run it. It has nothing to do with the skimmer. The venturi brings air into the pumps intake and mixes it with the water. When you get the maxijet you will understand cuz hooking up tube doesn't work. Rio pumps don't need the venturi attachment because they are designed different. The PUMP(maxijet) needs the VENTURI.

Question

Ironreef Aqua C skimmers use spray induction, the air is mixed inside the skimmer itself not the pump, the rio is not a rejuvanation powerhead I still don/t see why you think you need a venturi with the maxi-jet.

Ironreef,

I will clear this up. I do use a MJ 1200 on my Knop and do have to use the venturi adapter. On the Remora Aqua C uses a srpay induction system. All the pump needs to do is pump water into the skimmer. It does not need to draw in air using the venturi adapter. The Remora gets it air bubbles a different way. It can be explained this way. Did you ever fill a bucket with water using a high power nossle on the hose? Like when washing your car. Did you notice that there is alot of air bubbles in the water? When a fine needle like spray is shot into some water it will draw in air with it. Super fine air bubbles. This is how the Remoras works. HTH

Ok, I have set up the Remora with a Aquaclear 402 PH, this PH has the option to atach a air hose to the output, just like th maxijet 900, of which I also have. Do I need to connect this airline hose? This will be mounted in my sump with about 16-18" of 5/8 tubing going from the PH to the Skimmer.

Okay yes I forget about the air going through the spray injector just like a becket.Every other small skimmer that can use a maxijet needs the venturi to mix the air.=cpr ,knop type ect. If the maxijet doesn't mix with air then it will just pump water and not bubble. So I guess there wouldn't be a loss of power cuz the venturi isn't needed. then why would Aquac even sell them with crappy rio? Or is there a choice from the vendor.
