Hi:
just apoint about rating these skimmers..Its totally subjective and honestly its up to the manufacterur to set a gallonage rating based on what pumps they will hook up the skimmer. Case in point I had the opportunity to test the MTC HSA1000, and the bullet2 from precisionmarine. I used a MAK-4 pump on both and what i did was measure (gal/min) the outflow from the skimmers. A mak-4 is a 1100gph pump w/ a pressure rating (similar to an iwaki40), anyway after going thru the beckett head the MTC unit had a flow rate of approx~450gph, and the bullet2 was right around 500gph. So these untis were fairly equal, but what it tells you is that both of these manufacter rate these units for bigger tank (over150-200gal range), and yet the actually turnover rate thru the skimmer is only about 2-3 times 9the gallonage of bigger tanks). So using a small powerheads like a rio1700 or 2100 9as recommedned on AquaC units) one can imagine what the actual flowthru rate is in these units. As far as whats a better unit....Its your call, both will work for you, both will skim well...my personal opinion after seeing the euroreefs in action...No comparison.... my opinion frank |

I am with ya Ironreef. Been doing this for many a year. Seen lots of skimmers in action.
Most seem good until one sees one of the top end skimmers in action. Also Franks point is right on the money. To many are run with low powered pumps which a lot of companys say are fine. A Berlin for instance can operate on a Rio 2500 according to its rating but hook up a 2 or 3 MD andsee the difference. My older F1 Euroreef does a good job on my 170. I prefer the needle wheel type myself because one can use a smaller pump and still achieve good performance. If your using one of the other good skimmers mentioned above, dont downsize the quality of it by going with a smaller pump. ------------------ PapaDoug |

Yup better to have a smaller skimmer with max pump than a big skimmer with min pump.

To bad I got carried away and didn't stay with the original post. i belive Euroreef is in sump only Aqua C is in or out which I like choice but if the euroreef is taller or wider= better but no choice. So for u Aqua C is better even if Euroreef is a better skimmer. But they are =

Does the Remoro (in sump) make a lot of noise. I am looking for a skimmer for my 75g FOLR tank. I want to get a decent one but I dont care for a lot of noise which I have heard the Remoro makes.

First of all... AquaC's line of in-sump skimmers are the 'EV' skimmers. The Remora and Remora Pro are AquaC's HO models. As far as noise, the spray induction is a little noisey because you are shooting a stream of water into a 'pool' of water. This disturbance creates noise, but it also creates the fine bubbles that you are looking for out of your skimmer. My AquaC could be twice as noisey, and half as efficient, and i would still buy it. JMO though. HTH

I would go for the 150. Its easier to tune down your skimming or you don't have to worry about overfeeding as much. Its harder to make your skimmer skim more. 90 maybe fine but I would go with the 150.

I have pretty much decided on the aqua c ev 90 or 150.
I have a 75g FOLR oceanic tank with the standard pine stand that has 25 inches of height inside of it. Will the 150 fit inside that height wise or should I go with the 90. And what is a good pump besides a Rio for each of these. I am also planning on plumming this on the outside of the sump, do I run the return up and over the sump or is there another way. |
