I'm going to be getting rid of my emperor 400, since they are very nitrate friendly. I also have a fluval 304 in my 46 gallon and I'm looking at this protien skimmer http://www.thepetstop.com/more_info/BakPak2.html
What's everyone's thoughts?? I like the idea how it has a built in biological area. What do you think??? Thanks Chad |

Thanks Chad |

I just bought a Remora Pro for my 55 gallon last week and it has worked excellent. I haven't heard anything bad about these yet and they really aren't that expensive.

Ok, I'm set on sold on replacing my 46-gallon's (w/20-gallon refugium) dinky no-name skimmer with either a Remora or a Remora Pro. I've never seen my current skimmer so much as pull out anything other than a small amount of white foam, and regular water from the tank.
Can anyone think of any probs I'd have if I got a Remora Pro for my setup? I know that the regular Remora is rated for up to 75 gallons, which is more than I need for my max 66-gallon setup. However, I'd rather get one that I won't have to replace in the not-too-distant future, assuming I eventually get a larger tank. What do you think? Would a Remora Pro be an overkill for my system? Thanks! -Tarek |

BAK-PAK2 is quieter cheaper and will work well on a 46 gallon. Try ffexpress.com I think they had them for $113 last time I checked. The remora may be slightly better but it is also noisier and you don't need anything bigger than a bak-pak for you sized tank. The bak-pack is a perfect skimmer for a 46 gallon.

If you feed your fish and LS you won't overskim with a remora pro. But you may need to know if it will fit. I personally wouldn't use a back pac on anything bigger than a 30g its a puny skimmer. I had one on my 55g and I had to empty the cup 3-4 x aday but I had a heavy bioload of corals and fish. If you have a very small fish load a bacpac would be fine but I only has 6fish in a 55g the biggest was my 3" blue tang.

I have only heard good things about the bakpak, but you are limited to a 60 (?) gallon tank.
Have any of you guys tried/seen/heard about one of those HSF skimmers? Seems like they are the new rage for large tanks. F |

The BakPak is rated for 60gal, but most people will agree that the skimmer can, in fact, polish about half that much water (30 gal.) It may be able to handle 60gal of water, but it will not keep it nice and pristine. If you have a very small bioload, you might be fine, but our tanks tend to be overstocked for the most part so why risk it.
If you know that you are going to be upgrading down the road, then go with the Remora Pro. I would not worry about over skimming, just keep your tank well fed, and keep up on your waterchanges. If, when you upgrade, you are going to have a sump, and are going to want to purchase an in-sump skimmer, then i would go with the Remora. ------------------ jImMy "Watching fate as it flows down the path we have chose" "...Never thought to question 'Why'?" I just ordered a Remora Pro for mine, I will eventually be getting a bigger tank, so I figured you can't really overdue to, besides I would rather do it right the first time. Plus it was on sale. Thanks for all the input, it is very much appreciated.

yup its easy to skim less with a big skimmer by turning it off but I don't think you will need to. But its harder to increase skimming on a small skimmer. bacpac is good but for small tanks.

I just thought I would ask this, real quick not that it's that big of a deal, do I need to watch the water level more with a protein skimmer? Or is it just the nonwanted stuff in the water that ends up in the cup??

I will say this much about the bak pak. Its a decent skimmer on smaller tanks. On bigger tanks, say like 60 to 75gal, you can get great skimming by doing the airstone mod. I did it on mine and the quality of the foam is great. I get more skimming now and i also solved the bubbles returning into the tank. Sometimes you have to try things out and see for yourself.
