Well, I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination. However, my LFS started bringing these in and let me borrow the retailers video. Anyway, from what I've seen, it's no different than a sump/refugium except for 2 points:
1) It's alot more expensive than a DIY sump/refugium
2) It uses "Miracle Mud" instead of LS
The Miracle Mud "claims" to reintroduce trace elements and minerals that are required for a successful reef tank. However, I built a 10gal sump/refugium for my wife's 20gal for a fraction of the cost. I am trying the Miracle Mud in it though to see any difference between it and our 72gal w/ a 26gal sump/refugium. FWIW

Remember...Wherever you go...There you are.
I've had one set up for 2.5 weeks and have already noticed a drop in nitrates. As for the miracle mud, I'm not sure if it's helping or not. Coral extension of my sps "does" seem more pronounced, but I'm not sure if that's because of the supposedly increased trace elements or because of the reduction in nitrates. Whatever the case, the only true measure is time. One thing that I have noticed is that ever since I added the mud I get a bit of a diatom problem. My guess is that, like any mud, the miracle mud contains silicates. However, I'm hoping that will subside with a little time. Actually, I heard that "some" silicates in a tank are actually beneficial. (Can't remember where I read that article)

Matthew,
I don’t have any experience with the EcoSystem 40, but I have been running a home made ecosystem as part of my current reef.
Visit my web site if you are interested.

Scott
