spectra pure. I got a good deal. doesn't matter they are (most) standard and all filters are interchangable get the one thats cheap and well built and most gph you can afford. You can always add di to it. kent or spectra pure are well built some are poorly built. =fittings. I would get clear canisters also.

I use a Kent HI-S unit because I am on a well. I bought the drinking kit with it because the nitrates are a little high. I also have it split up so for the drinking water it just goes through the membrane and the first 2 chambers and for the aquarium water it goes through the DI unit also. It was less expensive than the Spectrapure - at least at the time. Might be different now. You can usually save some money by shopping around.

I just use the Tap Water Purifier from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals (I think)-- it's just a DI unit. For a small tank it's economical and if you run the water through very slowly it seems to do a great job. The bonus is there's no water wasted.

Cool

Dan,

Thanks to budget (I'm not with the government, after all) I had to buy the cheapest one that I could get. It's a no-brand, very slow and under a hundred bucks, and hooks up to the sink. It produces water at about a drop a second, and in ten hours it can fill a five-gallon can. This water makes great coffee, too... six rounded teaspoons of espresso grind used to make five cups of decent coffee, now it only takes five teaspoons and the coffee tastes better.

I got an extra sediment filter with it, because we have silty water (if what collects inside the showerhead is any indication). But after six months the output has only slowed slightly. I plan to change this filter out soon, and cut the old one open to see what's inside.

To fill the 90g, I used a long tube going from the output of the RO to the tank. Took over a week to fill, but that gave me time to level the tank properly.

No complaints here with a cheap unit!

Cheers,
Rob

I use the TWP, same as OttawaDon and Razorbackfan. Cost $49.00 and will fill a 5 gal in under an hour at tempature.
Just hooks up to the sink.

Dan, I would say that my Spectrapure unit paid for itself in a year, after figuring out the cost of RO\DI water for the tank and drinking water for the family it adds up fast. IMO, you should get the cheapest unit you can find. There all about the same.

get the cheapest unit you can find I agree with as long as its a good brand with clear canisters. I seen some at lowes thats were poorly made compared to my spectrapure. the cost @ the same also. get the biggest on you can afford at least 25g but 50 is better. 90g a TWP would cost more by using that it would get used up to fast.

Dan,
You cant beat this deal. Tell them I sent you, I have dealt with these guys and they have great CS. I had some intital problems but got them worked out and I am very pleased. The main problem I had was I have very cold water going into the unit, 50deg, the water needs to be real close to 76 deg for optimum performace. They hooked me up with some tee's and stuff that allow me to use a faucet adapter to mix temps to get it right. That way when I need to make a large batch of water I can mix it. Mine has a drinking attachment also, but I dont get as much drinking water as tank water. http://www.aquariumwaterfilters.com/Barracuda.htm

Free upgrade to 100gpd until feb 1st. But if you call them and dont buy until a few days later they would still give you the deal I would imagine. Speak with either David or Bryan.

ps: how did the finishing job turn out?

If you decide to get the 4-stage RO/DI Barracuda, be sure to add the 40-gal storage tank. Besides the free upgrade from 50gpd to 100gpd, they also have free shipping on any orders over $300. That is the system I would really like to get but I might just do what you were thinking about and that is start out with a TWP, only not the one from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. AquaFX (the Barracuda guys) also makes their own "TWP" and it is twice as large as the name brand one. Check it out: http://www.aquariumwaterfilters.com/...r_Purifier.htm

I don't feel like dealing with all the waste water issues, input water temperature issues, water pressure issues, and available space issues that I would have to address with a full-on RO/DI system. I will probably end up with one eventually but I'm seriously thinking about starting out with one of the AquaFX DI filters. It would be cheaper than buying RO water at Wal-Mart (8 miles away) or RO/DI water at the LFS (45 miles away).

I figure it would be a cheap way to start out and I can always sell it real cheap--or give it away--when I am ready for a real RO/DI system... or I could just keep it for back-up.

Ninong,
The water you have should be close to a good temprature. I live in the mtns and have my water pumped down from a resovior on top of the mtn I live on, it is City water. Most house pressure's are in the 50-60psi range so you should be good there. I had to bump my water pressure up a tad but I had it intentionaly set low. I also have VERY high water pressure. I can exceed 300psi during the night, yes it would make a good pressure washer, So, naturaly I had to put pressure reducer(s) to keep from blowing the copper pipes Give the folks a call, they can tell you more about if you are a good candidate.
ps, if I had the space under the sink I would have one of those 40g tanks, I have a 4g now.

Maybe you could do what I did. I reread my post and talked myself into ordering the "double-sized" TWP plus 3 extra cartridges from AquaFX this afternoon. I assume that since they are twice a large as a regular TWP, they should get twice as many gallons per cartridge, right? Anyway, I figure it comes to about 10-15 cents per gallon, which is cheaper than Wal-Mart or the LFS. Maybe I'll get a full RO/DI setup in the future.
