Yes it certainly is possible. I started out with this exact configuration for about 3 months until I finally got my Blueline metal halide ballasts -they were just coming out back then. Growth rate and coloration does suffer though but you may find a few particular SPS that do stay colored up under such lighting. Keep them as high as you can. The Tridacna squamosa and derasa would probably be more suited if you're not bent on getting maxima/croceas.

If you're really serious about the SPS and crocea/maximas then you should really consider 400w metal halides - you'll really like how they thrive and color up.

BTW are you going to Western Marine Conference in Monterey this April 6-8?

Not my tank but uses only VHO and his corals look great. He also uses VHO on his grow out tanks and his SPS grow an inch per month.

KrakenSeas,

Yes!!! SPS's will grow well under VHO's.

Check out my site at:
http://www.homestead.com/normsreef/opening.html

Look at the before and after pics for the Green Slimer. This is a 75 with 4 110W VHO's from URI 2 50-50's and 2 Super Actinic's.

The pics are large so it may take some time to load.

Good Luck

Norman

While I cant offer any experiences with clams (as I have never attempted to keep one), I can tell you about my experiences with VHO and SPS's. My lighting is 4 75 watt VHO's over a 29 gallon mini reef. The SPS's that I are thriving in this tank are Tri Color Acroporas, Green Velvet Montipora, purple tipped Montipora Digitata, some green Acropora, and a Flourescent Green Hydnophora. I keep them about 4 inches from the top of the tank. I also place them in the middle of the tank, as flourescent bulbs will be the most intense in the middle area of the bulb. Good luck with it, and certainly dont avoid keeping SPS's because you feel VHO's aren't strong enough.
