Post Rio melt down..........need some more help

Came home this morning to my 55 down and out, I thought the GFI had kicked out so I restarted it and went to bed.....an hour later the wife woke me up letting me know the tank was not running again, got up and them smelled the smell of a burned motor....the 5 year old RIO was out...I couldn't really see any damage to the motor but I could smell it and it didn't work............lucky I have the 150 ready to go so I guess today is the day....here's a few ??

Is it going to kill me\them if I use a small amount of the water form the 55 even thought the rio burned up in there....AGAIN, I really didn't see anything wrong with the pump other that it didn't work and it smelled....I only have about 20 gallons of water mixed up and its going to take more than that to acclimate the fish, corals from the 55......I'll probably wind up using about 15 gal of water from the 55

Sorry for the quick post, I hope you can read what I wrote..I should be sleeping now..

BTW, whats up with the piece of crap Mag 7....everytime it stops I have to lift it out of the water to restart it??

mark as long as there isn't any of the melted rio oil stuff in the water i see no reason why it wouldn't be ok to use some of the water..Now really i don't acclimate things in my tanks, when Iam switching them between tanks..I've never had a loss this way..I do keep all the tanks prety close spec wise..But still you might not need to acclimate everything as long as usual..Dan

Thanks Dan, The only problem is I let the SG get out of wack on the 55 ......it's 1.028 and the 150 is 1.026.....I'm going to take a few days off work and get things together.... The Sally lightfoot thinks it going in the 150, I got other plans for that puppy, he's going to sump prison

Golfish,

Just to be safe, you might do a copper test.

The fact that the GFI tripped indicates some kind of copper to water contact.

Scott

Thanks Spasse, Its been a bad day. I managed to get 2 hours of sleep and get all the LR and corals out of the 55 but I still have to move the fish a few snails and crabs+ then the very live and dirty sand bed. I only used about 2 gal of water from the 55, I kinda forgot about all that LR in there

I would recommend you transfer everything including the water and use a polyfilter in the new system as well as new activated carbon to try to catch anything nasty. But as stated above, if you can detect copper, don't do it.

Did the rio trip the GFCI? What model was this? Was it being used as a pump or a powerhead? On a sump?

I am trying to rationalize keeping some of mine.

wgscott,
I used as little of the water as I could (probably 15 gal)I know it would have been better to use more of the water but I really couldn't take that chance. The 150 has been going for 6 weeks and evrything was great in there. I was just waiting for a few days off work to do the transfer ..What a messy job transfering the live sand bed. So far so good, all the fish, corals, LR, and about 25% of the live sand are in the 150....The RDII skimmer is actully working

The Rio was a 2100 or 2500 and was used as a return pump for exactly 5 years, it did trip the GFCI.....

Red face

Mark, sorry to hear about that.
Wasn't there a movie called 'Blame it on Rio' ?

Seems that all the Rio nuking the tanks posts ovewr the past months where not that far from reality then, or just a coincidence. That, and the fact that they are not even UL listed, made me go with the Turboflotor Multi (HOB version with German Aquabee pump), instead of the regular Turboflotor with a Rio powerhead.
