Auto Top-Off float switch

Where do I need to put the float switch to control the soleniod for the auto top off I am installing? If I put the switch in the sump, the level will always stay the same due to the barriers over and under (water seeks own level) If it doesnt then the pumps will quit. If I install ii in the tank then the level would affect the overflow water level.

Paul, I don't know if this is true, but I think I read it when I was looking for plans for my sump. The only chamber of my sump that will actually show the evaporation level is the last return chamber of the sump. Of course, this is assuming you have one continous sump and it is not connected to anything else like a separate refugium. But I don't know this for sure. I would assume that if this is true, the solenoid can be installed in the final return chamber. I don't think this will help you probably, but I tried! [img]/ubb/eyemouth.gif[/img]

I'm not sure I understand your sump but the float switch should go in the last compartment of the sump (where the return pump pulls from). This is where I have mine at...the water level will not drop in the tank cause your using overflows, the level will drop in the sump....HTH

That makes sense, I will have to wait until I get the sump going to see where the water level will naturally be. My sump is basically a over, under, over through LR/LS then over into the return chamber.

I would bet the level will drop in the return chamber

The water level in the chamber closest to the return pump will drop as water evaporates.

Ltspd, this is how i mounted my switch to protect it from water current. its inside the cplg in a hole drilled in a test cap.
