I just started my 80 gallon tank, and I have an Iwaki American model XLRT20. I believe they are good external pumps but i didn't want to spend the extra cash for the Japanese models. I think the 40 model will be good for you, but not sure.

Blue,
CPR overflow. It works fine. I tested it all, but I know it's not 100% safe. I'll post pics of the hood I built on Sunday. So are you not going to use Metal Halides? Regards, Ilham |

Reef120,
I am partial to the GEN-X! I love this pump, long lasting, quiet, easy to service, dont add as much heat as a similar pump, pretty inexpensive....blah blah blah, just a great pump. IMHO. HTH. I am receiving my new Sump/Refug on the 16th. It was designed for my 120gal reef tank. Which external pumps do you all suggest..GEN-X, Iwaki,Dolphin? Also what model. I am using two overflows that with both will handle about 1200-1400 per hour?

I just set up a 180 and got the Dolpin Amp Master 3000 which I must say I love. It pulls only .9 to 1.3 amps, no heat transfer and will provide 3,000gph w/5 ft head. Very quite.

hee hee, I don't think you want to put 3000gph through your refugium The Amp Master is a great pump but it was way too much for my 150 gal tank with 40 gal sump at full throttle.I changed it out for a Mag 12 and use the AM3000 on a closed loop. If you want to throttle it down it will still save you $$ on your electric bill....

amp 3000 if you have 1" p,umb it will only puch 1200gph at 4" and you always have a big pump. Dolphin told me this. better than the rest. iwaki would be better than mak4 but cost more but a better pump.

Is the price difference for the Iwaki american made and japanese made really worth it?

I have jap Iwaiki MD40 1200gal flow rate @ 4ft. extremely quiet, cool to the touch. Have to look at returns to see if pump is running. They come without a plug? You can buy one at hd for under $10. If you have the money I recommend, get the Iwaiki.

dunno but at 13' its 20gpm = 1200gph with 1 1/2" plumbing. I would belive 1" wouldn't be much maybe half or less. At 0 1 1/2" =60gpm and 1" =26gpm big reduction.

livingstone,
I had my sump/refugium custom built with the exact perameters that allows me so many gallons for evaporation, backflow. The name of the company is called Marine Mechanics. There web site is http://www.marine-mechanics.com/index.html. The sump/refug that I purchsed was the Extreme style. If you call talk to Hutch Hrchenson he is the builder and is extremely helpful also if you dont mind tell him Vito recommended you. You will be extremely pleased with his work and effort to help you with your design. I am running dual overflows with a Iwaki MD70RLT rated at 1500GPH at 4'... let me know if you need more help. reef120 |

following up...then you say its better to go with 1 1/2 inch instead of one inch on the return regardless of the head height?
by the way has does the amp master 3000 have the same breakdown problems as the old dolphins? |

No at 13' I would go with 1 1/2" fer sure. The 1" pipe amp3000= 1200gph at 4'. at 13' it would be a waste of a pump. amp master is new but the other dolphin pumps made like it have been strong for yrs. Dolphin didn't make the ss and sst pump I belive. It was good for them to discontinue the pump.
