Hang on refugium from CPR

i dont have room for a real refugium. And i was looking at the hang on one by cpr do you all think it would be any good for some sort of subsitut for a real one and any one out their has if so do you like it

I have a CPR hangon refugium that I bought from Marinedepot.com. It works great, but several warnings. I have the 800 gallon/hour flow one I believe and it is pretty wide. If you are planning to have only say 1" to 2" of space in between the wall and the back of the tank, you're out of luck. This will require 5"+ space for it.

I tested mine after connecting it by disconnecting the power, and then turning it back on again and siphon kept going and didn't cause any overflowing problems. Also, be prepared to do some plumbing, depending on the size of the bulkhead size on the bottom of the overflow. I have mine giong directly down to the sump/refugium.

Material wise, it is made of acrylic and you can get different varieties. I chose to get the clear version, but I know a black one is available.

My opinion, this product is good, despite other people having bad luck with it. There are also other hangon models out there made by Lifereef, and Tidepool ones.

I have it. It is ok. you need 6"+ clearance from the wall. It is supported by two pipes. I thought this was insane so i added additional support. Good things: easy to install and you don't need to do any special plumbing. I had to cut a couple of holes in my acrylic tank top, but it was no big deal. It seems to work ok, and you can put a 4" sand bed in it. i got the 24" long version. Bad things: many people report cyano growths. i think the chamber is just a little too narrow (4") for good circulation. I added a power-head. Also, during power cuts it WILL back-siphon and you can get flooded. It would probably be a good idea to put the intake pump on a UPS. Another bad thing: rio power head. All in all I like mine. I light it with a single daylight (6750K) PC 55 W lamp.

I have the 18", and I think for ppl with limited space it works just fine.

I have the 24" on my 65rr with 40 sump/grow out. I like it very much. This model uses the two pipes plus two supports. I have not had a siphon overflow problem, siphon yes, but unless your water surface is at the aq lip it shouldn't be a problem. Mine does bow quite a bit. If I had to do it again I'd probably make my own out of 1/4" or thicker acrylic (now that I've played around with it and am comfortable with it). I keep a dsb and macros in there, I also kept a Bangaii in there for about 2 months until I could up size my tank and keep a few together in the display. Bill.
