    Post HQI Light comparision

Here are some Light comparision I was asked to take by ScubaDude. I am not know for quality pictures.

The bulb types are as follows:

The 250w are AB 10kk HQI's on a LN ballast
The 150w is a Ushio 10kk HQI on a Aromat ballast
    The Actinic's are 40w URI's on a standard ballast

The pictures would be brighter had I took them in a dark room at night. I also moved the tripod 1/2 way through the shots slighlty to the right .

First shot is (2)250w and the actinics.

Thumbs up This is some good Stuff!

Thanx Paul! Im gonna be getting a submersible lux Meter soon and Im gonna try and do some test too. My main objective was to see the Par difference in the 150W versus the 250W...and NOW I can do it Hope you dont mind but I cut a couple of the pictures up and sized them down so they could be put side by side for better comparison (kinda hard to scroll up then down) anyway here is the comparison for anyone else who is interested.

Paul would you mind if I Use these pics on my website for reference? Of course with all credits to you Bro!

No problem with using them. Since I am either too lazy or too busy ;) to create my own web site use what ever you wish.

I really should do this at night in a dark room. Maybe this weekend. The lights appear brighter. Hey, I might even try to keep the tripod in the same spot,

At least you didnt give us pics of your explanation of a moonlight :eek3: hehe

Hey I got another question....the pics that I just posted for comparison...I noticed that the 150w HQI looks a tad bit yellower than the 250w HQI....Im guessing that you just fired up the 150w? (cuz my 250's are almost yellow when they first fire up..then about 3-5mins later they clean up into a whiter like your pics of the 250's) It cant be that much different in color!...Im impressed with the intensity of the bulb though! I dont think it has the intensity that the 250 does...but watt for watt its pretty impressive!

    Paul,

I know you haven't been using this setup that long but do you have any preference between the Ushio and AB bulbs so far? Do you see any color difference between the two? I realize they are different wattage so this may be hard to tell.

Actually the 150w had been running for 15 minutes. I made sure of that, and the 250's had been running about 1 hr when I did the comparisions. All these bulbs IMO should be thru their burnt in periods

The 150w is a Ushio Bulb where the 250w's are AB. There is a diffrence, IMO, with the AB being my preferacne. Here again as Bowfront commented the wattage is diffrent.

Still, you need actinic's IMO to smooth the light out to a crisper white. So with that in mind I dont think it makes that much of a diffrence in bulb brand.

Scuba, I am saving the moonlight picture for just the right thread ;)

Reefland on the other hand has posted our moonlight picture

    hehe

Ok you lost me bud!...My 250w HQI bulbs are Ushios....and they appear to put out the same color as your 250w (this is all based on pics) Is it me or does everyone else think the 150w bulb appears more yellow than the 250?....I agree w/you paul about either of the may need a touch up w/some actinics...but from the pics the 150 needs alot more 03 than the 250 does. Maybe its just placement of the bulbs and intensity differences.

I think the wattage plays a big role in what we are seeing in the pictures.

Also the 150w is in the center, the 250 is on one end. Both are the same distance from the water and have the same reflector under them.

yeah, you really can't go by pictures even if the AB and Ushio were side by side it would be hard to tell (250 watt). To me the pictures all looked the same except for the actinics only.

I'm going to replace my Ushio's with AB's this summer just because I have read they are a little less yellow. Unless the 20K's show up over here

Paul, was your camera's flash on??? I think you would get better results at night in a darkened room with only the tank lights for illumination.

I noticed the glare on the glass and was thinking the same thing as Ninong. In any case, thanks for the pics!
