Hi.I'm new to Reefland.I live in South Africa.I have recently changed from Reef to FOWLR but have kept some ears, star polyps, various Zoos and shrimps. My Semi Angel and Threadfin don't seem to bother them.I looking to keep a collection of Angels and butterflies.I have 800l set up with heavy skimming,LR in tank and sump,Carbon filter,PO4 filter and DSB with loads of macro algae.I have no mechanical filtration as the skimmer is plumbed into the overflow. All the Angel set ups I see on youtube are in USA and they are stunning.Would I be able to keep the fancy angels with this arrangement.I do 33% water change monthly with natural seawater that I collect from our local seaworld.I would love to get some ideas from your side of the world.

The LFS talked me into getting some Damsels. However I am concerned about a water change. So I bought a few damsels. My ammonia levels are between 0 - 0.25. 0.18 if I had to guess the color. Should I do a water change now? The fish have been in the tank for about 4 days and are doing really well. I have done any water changes yet. The only water that has gone into the tank is top off water. My protien skimmer is working very well I might add.

Also, are there any chemicals I should be putting into my tank? I have not found any articles related to chemicals for new tanks.

I have a 50g tall tank with somewhere around 45 lbs of live rock. It has been set up for almost a year all tank parameters are normal, temp about 76f.
Now, I just purchased a very nice Mandarin, only to find out he wont eat except what he finds on the live rock, this may be ok for now, but I fear it wont be enough for this really cool fish.

I know that copepods are a big part of their diet, so here is my question/s.
How can I tell if they are in my tank?
How do I know if I have enough?
Should I go buy some and put them in at regular intervals so that there is enough natural food for him to survive?
Can you have too many copepods?
Is there an alternative food source that will also work?

I really love this fish. It was the inspiration for me getting my salt tank, I waited a whole year and have taken very good care of my tank. After some recent reading I have decided to add a 14g refugium to this tank, even though the conditions have been exceptional since it's first cycle. I feel lucky to have this fish and I hope I can keep it alive as long as possible.

Thank you for any input.
:feedback:

Hello everyone, I am here yet again looking for great advice. So it looks like there is a possibility of me moving, I just got a job about 2 hrs away and I think the commute will be too far. I was wondering about the raw mechanics of trying to orchestrate a saltwater move. Does anyone have any advice/been through themselves for what I should be mindful about. The good news is that I don’t have any fish in the tank just yet and I won’t add them until I am settled, however I do have a few snails and hermits that were just added. I have maybe 60lbs of LR Also the LFS threw in a mushroom in the bag and I have since transplanted it onto a piece of LR, it seems to be doing well, and because it was free I figured I would try my hand at caring for it. Also if I wanted to keep the “progress” of my tank in play, should I attempt to move some of the water also? (is it even possible to move and not have to restart the tank from scratch.... cycling) Really I need advice on what to do. By the time the move is ready to happen, the tank will be nearly 3 months old.

I'd like to throw this out there and see what kind of responses I get! I live in Florida and have access to Fiddler Crabs living in our Intra-Coastal Waterways. Wondering if they'd make a good 'snack' for a Picasso Triggerfish every now and then. I also realize it's a huge 'no no' to introduce 'outside' matter [Fiddlers possibly included] into an established tank. I'm not going to quarantine the crabs since I don't have the equipment, space etc. to do so, but rather just gather several every now and then and toss them to Mr. Greedy. Just a thought. Or am I :looney:

I have 2 saltwater fish tanks that have been set up and fine for over a year, I did a water change two days ago and when I woke up half of my fish were dead.

75 gallon
tomato clownfish
yellowtail damsel
sailfin tang - at the bottom breathing really hard, looks almost like it's having a seizure
hawkfish - dead
coral banded shrimp - dead
bicolor pseudochromis - dead
electric flame scallop
brittle star - all of his legs are falling off, but still alive
pencil sea urchin
hermit crabs

Also, a few weeks ago I got some new live rock, which apparently came with some "nuissance anenome." Could that kill everything?

55 gallon tank
seahorse
sand sifting star
pink/purple sea cucumber
scooter blenny -dead
hermit crabs

Okay, here's the story: My fish were all fine, but my nitrates were high, so I did a water change (25-30%) on both tanks. The water change occurred during the evening, and when I woke up in the morning my shrimp, hawkfish, and pseudochromis were all dead. My tang was at the bottom of the tank, breathing really fast and looking like she was having a seizure. My damsel was pale colored and my clownfish was swimming at the top of the tank and hovering there. I quickly checked on my 55 gal and it was fine, everyone was still alive. I figured my best bet was to put my tang into the 55 gal until I figured out what was wrong. So, I moved her and went back to the 75 gal. I realized that my aerator had gotten unplugged and so I fixed that. The tang was starting to look a little better in the other tank--no more seizure looking activity, but she still wasn't swimming and she was still breathing hard. I fed the other fish in that tank and hoped she'd look better tomorrow.

The next day, I got my water checked and they were both fine, but they were unable to check my salinity. I had always used a floating hydrometer for water changes, so I decided to get a stand alone one at the store to check. The salinity in my 75 gal was 1.028. I got it gradually lowered over the course of the day to 1.0245. The salinity in my 55 gal was 1.024. My tang still wasn't doing so well, so I figured I'd leave her in the 55 gal.

Today I woke up to find my tang still at the bottom breathing hard at the bottom of my 55 gal and now my blenny was dead. My damsel still looks pale and my clownfish is still swimming up at the top of the tank.

What should I do? What's wrong with my tanks? Should I keep changing my salinity? Is there something else I should check?

And on a side note, I recently have had a lot of long stringy hair algae growing in my 55 gal.

Please help!

Last week, after I had to empty my tank to move it to install my new sump and Fluval filters, I put him back in a never saw him again. This week, we replaced it with the same thing. We saw him for a couple days and then, we haven't seen him since the day before yesterday. Yesterday, I added a Royal Gamma. He was in hiding for awhile but came out for awhile last night. Today, I still can't find the Goby and now, I can't see where the Gamma is hiding.
I have a 55 gallon tank which I had to put in a divider when we temporarily adopted a panther grouper that I am now stuck with. the divider is secure and I can't see there is enough room for a fish to jump over. The tank has about 50 lbs. of live rock with a lot of nooks and crannies. My tank is stocked with a ruby anenome, an atlantic anenome, a few blue mushrooms, a fuzzy ruby, some green star polyps, 2 clown fish, a blue tang, and a skunk shrimp (yes, Finding Nemo fish-I have a 3 year old). There are also 9 nacirius snails and 4 hermit crabs. I have covers on my tank except there is a small opening (about 3 inches where the overflow box hangs and the inlet hose comes in, next to a power head.
My question is, where did my fish go?

I have a 75 gallon with 2 Aquaclear 50 PH's. A HOB Emperor 400 using 2/4 slots both carbon cartridges.
And about 15 pounds of LR. Of course a decent heater. And 6 damsels so far. I've been reading a lot and am confused as to what my next addition should be.
I'm thinking my Emp400 with the two large bio wheels should be doing great bio-filtration. No fish deaths for 6 months. As far as catching debris, it is so so. Should my other 2 cartridges be bio or carbon? Since I have two spots left.
Now do I need to immediately add more LR or should I go ahead and get a good skimmer? I'm looking to spend about 200 on a skimmer.
My LFS suggested I get about 15lbs more LR and CPR BakPak 2 or Fluval Fx5 with bio media.
I can't get everything due to budget constrains, but eventually I will. Also you guys think I have enough filtration now to get a Auriga Butterflyfish?
Thanks in advanced for help on my next step. :)
