Truly a work of art!
Indeed! I've been a big admirer of Steve's previous tank but this system is truly a work of art speaking volumes about the owner and his dedication to the hobby and his idea of a reeftank. Painstakingly selecting specimens and laying out aquascaping...I'm sure it took some time and effort and I am glad that his tank was selected for the Member of the Month feature.Originally Posted by jet_d

So,
Congratulation Steve!
Kind regards,

When I first saw your previous tank Steve I thought you where either german or asian because of the beauty of it. This tank definately keeps you par for the courseThanks for being an inspiration to me as well as others. Couple of questions about your setup
1. Maybe I breezed through it but is your tank glass or acrylic?
2.Very ingenious idea, any chance you have a picture of this? The skimmer is connected to the house’s sewer system.
3. With the amount of lights you have, do you find that you had to acclimate alot of your corals?
I totally feel for you the day you had to make the transition from your 500g to the 850g....that sounds like it was a very busy day![]()
Scott and anyone else that made this decicision on Featured Member....Great choice!
Rocky
Thanks all for your kind words...i'm glad that you enjoyed the write-up.
Scubadude..
1) The tank is made from entirely 1 inch thick acrylic
2) I don't have a pic of the interface....the connection is in my crawlspace. But, I just "T'd" into the sewer pipe and added a fitting to accept the skimmer's discharge line. The discharge line also has a dip in the line to create a water trap to prevent sewer gases from venting back into the collection cup.
3) I really think that my tank is not as strongly lit as many of the tanks seen here. I just have a larger area to light. Six feet X eight feet is a large surface area to light.
All I can say is![]()

Steve,
Amazing tank! Of course all your SPS were cool, but I loved seeing your riccordia "field" (in the middle left-ish area).
and...
I WANT YOUR BOX FISH!![]()
Did you get him online or at one of your local stores? Have you kept boxes before? Any problems with him and your other fish? How big is he? (can you tell that box fish -- of any kind -- are my faves??)
The boxfish is about 4 inches and came from my LFS. I keep him in the refugium.....he's too slow of an eater to compete with the reef fish.
Congrats! Congrats! Congrats! I never get tired of the pics, of both the front AND the back of the tank.
I just discovered your tank the other day. It is absolutely amazing.
I am having my house built soon and think I am gonna steal your idea of keeping the tank in the garage and just have the display part viewable through the wall in house. (My tank would be much smaller though.)
I always wanted to have a "built-in reef", but never thought of keeping the tank in the garage. I especially like how you have a separate enclosure to hide the plumbing and what-not, it must also help with temp control.
I am just about to check out your site at Oregonreef.com .
Thank you for sharing.
