Cool Substrate for German Rams

Well I'm setting up a German Ram tank for myself I've been doing a lot of research for a friend who wants one and I decided I want one too. The only thing is I was wondering what kind of plants and substrate should I use? It won't be heavily planted I was thinking some swordtails and some kind of floating plant, but I was wondering what substrate would be best for Rams? TIA

Henry

p.s. one of the tanks is a 20 L and the other is a 12 gal bow front
