i am doing things backwards i have a reef tank and am now wating to set up a fresh water tank but i dont know anything about them what type of filtration that is needed or of any bb for fresh water fish.
Don't know of any BB's, but I'll tell you some stuff: There isn't any FW analog to LR, LS or DSB's. You'll pretty much have to have some type of external filtration. Live planted tanks seem to help W/nitrates a little, but water changes still rule the world, and as far as external filtration, well, I guess it's dealer's choice, Canister's, wet/dry's, or hang-on's.
I run Magnum cannisters on my FW tanks w/ the BioWheel attachments. I've got a Magnum 350 on my cichlids and a HOT magnum on my discus. Both are great...
I run an UGF on the cichlid tank with 2 PHs also... and that's it for filtration.
You'll be amazed how much less $$$ you'll spend. I found all my rocks, sterilized them, then put 'em in the tank. Cost for FW rocks: 0 Cost for cured live rock for my reef tank: $550
Aqualink has a good FW section and FW planted section with a lot of very knowledgable people. I am setting up a 110g planted tank with Eheim filters, PC, and CO2. A whole different ballgame, but still fun.
